What drives a blonde Australian beach bunny to go on jihad? That extraordinary question serves as the premise for one of the most absorbing non-fiction titles to surface this year.

The Mother of Mohammed (MUP) by Australian journalist Sally Neighbour, 48, digs into the background of the beach bunny in question, Rabiah - born Robyn - Hutchinson, with flair, wit and candor. This book pulls no punches.

"She was a scrawny, pale-skinned runt, with a shock of frizzy white-blonde hair and an eye-patch she wore from the age of two to correct a severe astigmatism," Neighbour writes. "What she

lacked in physical stature she made up for in sheer pluck, as she stumbled through the bush behind her brother like a pint-sized pirate, game for almost anything," she adds, before proceeding to document her subject's slide into radical politics and the surreal exoticism of war-torn Afghanistan.

Rabiah spent four years working as a doctor in a mujahideen hospital and orphanage on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border during the Afghan jihad in the early 1990s. She later returned to Afghanistan under the Taliban and married a leading al-Qaeda ideologue and member of Osama bin Laden's inner circle. Her fellow jihadis knew her as "Umm Mohammed", meaning the mother of Mohammed. She has been described by a former US Central Intelligence Agency agent as "the Elizabeth Taylor of the jihad".

Rabiah Hutchinson told The Australian her passport was cancelled after returning from Iran in 2003 because of her links to Al-Qa’ida and Indonesian militant group Jemaah Islamiah.

An ASIO assessment reportedly said Ms Hutchinson had “directly supported extremist activities” and, if allowed to travel, was “likely to engage in conduct that might prejudice the security of Australia or a foreign country.”

Ms Hutchinson said she wanted to visit her daughters in Afghanistan.”

SNIPPET: “Ms Hutchinson’s Darwin-born sons, Mohammed, 23, and Abdullah, 21, were last year interviewed by ASIO agents when they applied to renew their passports at the Australian Embassy in Beirut.

Lebanese officials refused to renew their visas so they fled to Dubai.

They had been living in a small village outside the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli after they were arrested on terrorism charges and deported from Yemen.

Ms Hutchinson moved to Darwin in the 1980s, but later joined a student Islamic group involved in the resistance against Indonesian president Suharto.

In 1990 she travelled to northwest Pakistan with her six children to “join the jihad”.”

Something similar to Stockholm Syndrome. I've noticed this from time to time in people who for one reason or another are unhappy with their lot in life. They can identify who groups that would normally hate them. It's a bizarre phenomena but it exists in a lot of different forms. It's a true hatred of oneself, family, community, and nation. I believe most people have seen this in teenagers or young people who's behavior is self destructive and that would seek to the destroy those in the family or community.

It's particularly true with females. They are the most likely to exhibit this behavior. I've seen mild forms of it myself.
