President Obama's call for the Senate to ratify a hemispheric small-firearms treaty dominated his last visit to Mexico, but in the four months since, both the treaty pledge and the drug violence that prompted it have dropped off the radar - a victim of Congress' full schedule and gun politics. That means on Sunday Mr. Obama will go with an empty hand to Mexico, which blames the U.S. for many of the weapons used by drug cartels that have violently thwarted a crackdown by Mexican authorities. Both Mexican and Canadian officials bring to the meeting concerns that the U.S. is moving away from free trade. Canada is worried about buy-American provisions in the economic stimulus spending bill, and Mexico has imposed retaliatory measures in response to Congress' halting a program to allow Mexican trucks on U.S. highways. The program is part of U.S. trade obligations. For its part, the U.S. is eager to discuss coordination on swine flu precautions and combating global warming. Still, the issue of drug-cartel violence along the U.S.-Mexico border, which dominated the springtime meeting in Mexico City between Mr. Obama and Mr. Calderon, will be a hot topic yet again.

Hugo Chavez, the 800 pound pig in the room, supplies firearms and drugs to the perps, and no one seems to want to look that away.
My suspicion is the donks don’t want another ‘war room’ defending their next gun ban proposal.
[shakes fist at sky] "Damn you gun show loophole!!!"
The notion that the type and quantity of the weapons being see there come from gun shops and "straw buyers" was always stupid on its face.
I buy my heavy ordnance at Costco...
Good.
... which blames the U.S. for many of the weapons used by drug cartels
FReep 'em. If they can't handle their own law enforcement, they have only themselves to blame. It would help if the drug gangs didn't own most of the government officials, right up to the presidency.
I keep wondering, and see no answer, what percentage of them were exported LEGALLY with full knowledge & approval of US Customs, BATFE, etc.
As noted, you don’t move that quantity and type from civilian purchases. Either the military has gaping holes in their warehouses, or someone’s doing it en masse entirely above-board (albeit low-profile).
The crap dropped off the radar because the lie about 98 % of the guns in Mexico being used in crimes were smuggled in from the US has been successfully refuted. They kept trying to make it fly but even the dems know their pitiful careers depend on the gun owners voting for them.
Ping!
If you want on, or off this S. Texas/Mexico ping list, please FReepMail me.

Let me send this to the rewrite desk...
Mr. Obama will go to Mexico, which the U.S. blames for many of the drug cartels that have violently thwarted a crackdown by American authorities.
There, that’s more like it.
The drug gang’s weapon of choice is the AK... which comes in by the boatload from China.
Saying the gangs are getting their weapons from the US is like saying illegal aliens are upstanding citizens: it is an utter fabrication, believed only by idiots and liberals.
GOOD. We do NOT need to kiss Mexico’s ass om guns.
ON guns.
