BRIDGETON - A national immigrant rights leader on Saturday urged undocumented workers in South Jersey to boycott the 2010 national census. Rev. Miguel Rivera, head of the National Coalition of Latino Clergy and Christian Leaders (CONLAMIC), made his case to roughly 45 to 50 attendees at a meeting of local migrant workers and sympathizers held at the Salvation Army facility on West Commerce Street. The meeting was hosted by the Farmworkers Support Committee (CATA, or Comite de Apoyo a Los Trabajadores Agricolas). The stated goal was to unite immigrant organizations and supporters behind a plan pushing Congress to pass legislation sympathetic in part to immigrants, including the estimated 12 million in the U.S. who are undocumented...

"We realize that the census is very important in setting Congressional districts and determining the distribution of funds," Rivera said on Saturday. "The problem is, there is no other alternative in applying pressure to Congress to achieve fair and comprehensive immigration reform."...

He said he and his group want Congress to pass the reform legislation by the spring of 2010. CATA leaders feel current policy saddles immigrants with onerous, drawn-out paths to legal residence...."The identity of the American people and what they stand for are at a crossroads," said CATA Executive Director Nelson Carrasquillo.

Carrasquillo said he fears a violent backlash against the movement...

Gee, he's urging people who've already broken the law to......

Comite de Apoyo a Los Trabajadores Agricolas is the world socialist organization for farm workers, which uses the Alinskey playbook. "Onerous, drawn out paths to legal residence..." indeed.

Everyone realizes how self-defeating this WOULD be, so no-one will actually boycott the Census, but it WILL give the US Census Department an excuse to say the 450 million people they count should be expanded by another 30 million to account for all the illegal aliens.

I’d like to encourage all of the people living in majority-Dem districts to boycott the census as well.

Illegals encouraged to boycott 2010 census,

KarlInOhio endorses this boycott. I see no reason why sanctuary cities/states should get extra government money from welcoming illegals.

CATA leaders feel current policy saddles immigrants with onerous, drawn-out paths to legal residence....

There is an easy, quick path to legal residence. Start going south and when you see a "Welcome to Mexico" sign, you're a legal resident again.... oh, you meant legal residence here. Sorry, I can't help you there.

I support it, too. It displays an abysmal ignorance of how our government is formed and how it functions. It attempts to demagogue by urging their disappearance! Let them muddle on.

As to the onerous, drawn-out path to legal citizenship, this group urges a "path" that looks like this: 1) cross the border illegaly; 2) sign up for benefits; 3) accept benefits and you're automatically in, no questions asked.

how else can we move them into MA subsidized housing and give them free health care? BTW the census freaks showed up here 4 times to validate that we did, in fact, “have another dwelling where people could be living”(and we house our legal farm workers there too! what will they make of that?)
