Charles Manson has become the richest prisoner in California

"Feel-good nostalgia tells us that 1969 was the height of the hippie, warm-fuzzy era of peace and love," said Murray Whyte in the Toronto Star, but Charles Manson's "stamp on the culture is arguably deeper and more lasting" than even Woodstock's. Forty years ago, "puppetmaster" Manson orchestrated "a generation's defining criminal atrocity"—the "Helter Skelter" killings in Los Angeles, Calif., during which director Roman Polanski's pregnant wife, Sharon Tate, was among those murdered. To this day, "legions of gawkers" still make a "macabre pilgrimage" to the scene of the crime.

"Long after his capture and incarceration," said Owen Gleiberman in Entertainment Weekly, Charles Manson's legend "has only kept growing." Even though he is "the hippie-psycho cult-killer equivalent of Adolf Hitler," he is a huge part of popular culture—his "dark" image has become "as larger-than-life as that of Che Guevara." Maybe what still holds our fascination is the way that Manson convinced a group of "smiling middle-class achievers and homecoming queens" to commit such atrocious murders.

"There are still those who are mesmerized by this evil maverick," said Ivor Davis in the Daily Mail, and "the story of the Manson murders has grown into something of a monster cottage industry." As sick as it is, "there is a huge demand for Manson memorabilia," and Manson has reportedly "become the richest prisoner in the California system, raking in a small fortune by running a lucrative autograph business from behind bars."

All his money should be given to the families of his victims.

As long at Tate’s scumbag husband doesn’t see any of it, that’s fine by me.

They can sue, but there may be a statue of limitations on it.

Hey! In the press now
"maverick" is always linked
to Sarah Palin!

Palin: Pioneer, maverick -- and now game-changer

Palin's rise a model for maverick politicians

Sarah Palin a good poker player? ... She’s a Maverick

I find him fascinating, too, but only as an extreme example of pure evil. His story is a fascinating one, especially the almost hypnotic hold he had on his followers.

Hell will burn brightly when the devil calls Charlie home.

There was a lot on TV over the weekend about Charlie the Psycho. There was a big riot at Chino and some prisoners were hurt. This made me think they pretty much have to keep Charlie separated from the rest of the prisoners, not because of his rock star notoriety, but I think a lot of prisoners would snuff him in one second if they got a chance. Granted Charlie is old and weak now, but to kill Charlie Manson would be a pretty big notch on some cons resume.

Of course, but Roman Polansky should turn around and give it to all the little children he abused.

I don’t believe in cruel and unusual punishment, but in Charlie’s case, I’d gladly make an exception. Very very slow torture is too good for him. I say clone him and kill him over and over.

I hate to defend a person that has since sunk into depravity, but he was by all accounts a loving husband and eager father to be.

Maybe what still holds our fascination is the way that Manson convinced a group of "smiling middle-class achievers and homecoming queens" to commit such atrocious murders.

Bill Ayers’ wife, Bernadette Dohrn, said THIS regarding the horrific Manson cult family murders of these 5 people:

Following the mass murders of actress Sharon Tate and others by disciples of Charles Manson, Dohrn had this to say: “Dig it. First they killed those pigs, then they ate dinner in the same room with them, then they even shoved a fork into a victim’s stomach! Wild!” Dohrn went on to suggest adopting a “fork” salute might be appropriate for her fellow homicidal maniacs.

"Feel-good nostalgia tells us that 1969 was the height of the hippie, warm-fuzzy era of peace and love," said Murray Whyte in the Toronto Star,

He's misinformed. The hippie era actually ended in 1967.
