Obama baby boom: Predicted surge in births goes bust
Chicago Tribune ^ | August 11, 2009 | Erika Slife

On Nov. 4, the hope and happiness seemed boundless for supporters of President-elect Barack Obama, leading some to speculate, with a wink and a nod, that in nine months there would be a virtual Obama baby boom -- a celebratory uptick in the national birthrate.

But now, 40 weeks later -- the average human gestation period -- MSNBC is reporting the prediction has largely been nothing more than, well, false hope.

In Chicago, ground zero for Obama's election celebration, area hospitals confirm that they have not seen a noticeable surge in births.

"Research evidence gives scant support for a one-day or one-month fertility 'spike' due to the election," Donald Bogue, a University of Chicago demographer and sociologist, wrote in an e-mail. "Births are now predominantly planned and not very responsive to good news."

Though his election apparently did not spawn a generation of Obama babies, the president may be tickled to know he has inspired a generation of baby names.

In 2008, the name Barack set what's believed to be a record for the Social Security Administration's annual Most Popular Baby Names list by skyrocketing more than 10,000 spots on the list, from No. 12,535 in 2007 to No. 2,409 in 2008.

And the Social Security Administration predicts the name will even crack the top 1,000 this year.

Actually I wonder how many actual birth certificates it takes to move a name up to the stratospheric level of 2409th most popular baby name.

Who cares about whatever this "baby boom" thing is. I still haven't received my unicorn. OBAMA PROMISED ME A UNICORN!!!! I'm so disillusioned.

The previous post was sarcasm, for those who take things a wee bit too literal.

The problem is, you don’t get babies from anal, as we all got it up the butt on November 4th. . .

Uh, what “good news” would that be? That the economy went down the crapper?

Interesting that the name Barack has zoomed up in popularity for baby boys.

When the Clintons came on the national scene in ‘92, the name Hillary for a girl went down in popularity, and has stayed down ever since.

I would love to see his birth certificate. Some rumors are that his name is listed as “Barry Dunham” on it. He went by the name Barry for years in school. Maybe he was born as Barry as took the name Barack as a nod to his African roots??

You know, I feel sorry for those innocent children.

How many innocent little German infants were named "adolph" back in the 30s?

Check the police blotters 20 years from now to see how many Baracks figure prominently in them.
