Protester warns: ‘You have awakened a sleeping giant'
Houston Chronicle ^ | August 13, 2009

Nancy Snyder says she kept quiet when abortion was legalized and prayer in schools was eliminated. Not this time.

“They did it for prayer, they did it for abortion, and they're not going to do it for our health care,” the 70-year-old nurse from Philipsburg, Pa., said Wednesday as she and her husband Robert, 74, a retired coal miner, waited in a long, snaking line for Democratic Sen. Arlen Specter's town hall meeting.

“We're not standing back this time,” Snyder said.

Instead, the Snyders and many Americans like them are adding their voices to a populist backlash evident in the taunts, jeers and rants at lawmakers' health care forums around the country in the past week and a half. The contentious sessions highlight the difficulty for President Barack Obama and the Democrats as they push for a comprehensive remaking of the nation's health care system.

The emerging protest movement is almost the mirror image of the grass-roots campaign that helped sweep Obama into office by pulling in people who'd never been politically active. This time Obama is seeing the other side of what can happen when people are motivated, connect over the Internet and seemingly reach a tipping point that turns them from onlookers into activists.

“You have awakened a sleeping giant,” one woman told Specter at a town hall meeting he held Tuesday in Lebanon, Pa.

Protesters interviewed at Specter's town hall events in central Pennsylvania this week were almost exclusively white, conservative and working class. But they ranged in age and their concerns went beyond health care to deficit spending, taxes, government growth and other issues. Many contradicted claims from Democratic leaders that their protest was manufactured by lobbyists or that they represented an orchestrated opposition led by Republicans or national conservative groups.

People like my wife who hae never been politically active are suddenly turning into fervent activists. (I’m the activist type. I grew up in Young Americans for Freedom.)

This is a serious danger to liberals and their dreams of takling over every detail of our lives.

“almost exclusively white, conservative and working class.”

Bravo! Maybe the white, conservative working class, who has been held hostage, is sick and tired of being the foot stool for a minority group that comprises 13.5% of the US population that has run amok. Nobody speaks for the white, working class because it would be considered racist. Could this possibly be the “other giant” that has awakened?

Maureen Dowd calls townhall attendees

“OLD WHITE MALCONTENTS.”

“...Instead of a multicultural tableau of beaming young idealists on screen, we see ugly scenes of mostly older and white malcontents, disrupting forums where others have come to actually learn something. Instead of hope, we get swastikas, death threats and T-shirts proclaiming “Proud Member of the Mob.””

I agree with you, Non, that the younger ones should be out vocalizing, but it's the older ones who face the risk of end of life issues. This is a brief summary from the DeathCare Bill:

"Just received a three-page printout from worldmag.com that highlights provisions in the 1,017 page healthcare bill. To quote:

..The government will audit your books if you self-insure. The newly created Commissioner will submit a report to the government that includes "any recommendation the Commissioner deems appropriate to ensure that the law DOES NOT PROVIDE incentives for small and mid-size employers to self-insure." (21.23-23.3)

This is just one of 17 provisions that WORLD has summarized and posted to its website, www.worldmag.com, found under Washington's Prescription, The Editors, Healthcare.

Excellent material for information and hand-out. This is an absolute outrage.

Others: The government will define your "health benefits" ... will ration your care ... will establish and administer a public health insurance program ... will define how doctors manage their time ... will tax employers for not providing healthcare ... will tax individuals unless you are a foreign resident ... will order you to get end-of-life counseling and show proof ... will limit your hospital readmissions by penalizing hospitals ... will restrict coverage of special needs patients ... will not let you sue over coverage limits and costs decisions ... will mandate what physicians make ... will have access to your bank accounts ... will not call the fees it imposes taxes ... will issue you a health ID card ... will enlist or create outreach programs like ACORN to sign-up individuals in government-run plan; will create a new bureaucracy to include phone healthcare. References with page numbers and line items are given each provision.

Regarding end-of-life issues: "(An) advance care planning consultation between the individual and a practitioner...(is required if) the individual involved has not had such a consultation within the last five years," including an explanation by the practitioner of "end-of-life services." (page 424, line 20--page 425, line 23) "A consultation...may include the formulation of an order regarding life sustaining treatment or a similar order, "including end-of-life services." (page 429, lines 1-3). "Orders regarding life sustaining treatment, including "end-of-life" directions, can be signed either by a physician or a "nurse practitioner or physician's assistant who has the authority under State law." (page 429, line 8-16).

I’ll bet Hillary is sitting back and saying to herself, “I’m glad I didn’t get elected and tried this health care boondoggle.”

Yep. She was smart and tried it without being elected. :-)

Scene: Tens of thousands of peasants surrounding the castle with pitchforks, hoes and torches, scowling and shouting “freedom” and “death to the king and to his lords”

Inside the inner chamber of the castle the kings squire hastily approaches the throne:

Squire: “Sire, the peasants are REVOLTING! The peasants are REVOLTING!”

Totally oblivious King: “Yes they are.”

The above scene is taking place in town halls and elsewhere, ALL OVER America, regarding Obama’s government run deathcare, “cap and trade,” “man made global warming” and amnesty for illegal aliens. Ironically, the attitude of most of those in power from our so-called “president,” on down to those in the House and Senate, is EXACTLY the same:

“The peasants are REVOLTING!”… “YES THEY ARE!”

Our so-called “leaders” choose to remain TOTALLY OBLIVIOUS to the reality of what is taking place and willfully refuse to understand WHY so many American CITIZENS (not surfs) are upset with their pushing policies and bills upon us that will enslave and hurt EVERYONE ELSE BUT THEM! The reason why is because they believe with all of their hearts that:

“All animals are equal, and some animals are MORE EQUAL than others.”

The American people are finally waking up and realizing that those in power believe that THEY are “MORE EQUAL” than the rest of us, i.e., those whom they govern; the VERY PEOPLE who have put them into power! They believe and act as though the rules and laws they pass apply to EVERYONE ELSE BUT THEM!

Americans are not going to let this stand because (contrary to what they believe) THIS IS NOT ANIMAL FARM, neither is it Venezuela, Cuba, Canada, communist China, North Korea or Russia! We live in AMERICA; a country that promises LIBERTY and JUSTICE for ALL, not just for those “animals” who deem themselves “BETTER” and “MORE EQUAL than others (read: everyone else).”

THIS is the reason why Americans are protesting and refusing to submit to Obama’s and the democrats so-called government run “health (death) care” program, because those in power, along with their entire extended families, ALONG WITH THE UNIONS AND ALL OF THEIR MEMBERS have all EXEMPTED themselves from being under the same program they are trying to FORCE upon everyone else.

We are NOT animals! We are Americans!

THIS IS NOT ANIMAL FARM! This is America!

It is high time that those in power realized this, unless they want to join the ranks of the last king, former aristocrat/autocrat who when faced with similar circumstances had the same attitude and audaciously said: “Let them eat cake.”

"Inflation became intolerable and interests unimaginable (under Carter).

The only reason we are not seeing interests rate spike is because the treasury is buying up it's own treasury bills and bonds in order to keep the supply tighter and the rates lower. They are doing this with money freshly run off the government printing presses and the dollars have no value.

Eventually we are going to get a great big bite on the butt from all these worthless dollars causing those that buy our debt to demand higher, much higher rates of return for them to assume what is becoming an ever increasing risk.

As a senior on Medicare, I say let Medicare collapse. It would be the best thing that ever happened to medical care. Without it, insurance companies would become more competitive and we could all afford insurance. Medicaid or free clinics for the truly needy.

Worse for Americans than the deathcare bill is the massive beauocracy that comes with it. There is a massive list of “committees”, “commissioners”, health care “managers” , etc that comes with it. Truly what we should be focusing on and calling attention to. The oboy touts “healthcare” with one hand while hiding the massive government takeover mechanics of the bill with the other.
