Finance Committee drops end-of-life provision
The Hill ^ | 8-13-09 | Michael O'Brien

The Senate Finance Committee will drop a controversial provision on consultations for end-of-life care from its proposed healthcare bill, its top Republican member said Thursday.

The committee, which has worked on putting together a bipartisan healthcare reform bill, will drop the controversial provision after being derided as "death panels" to encourage euthanasia by conservatives.

"On the Finance Committee, we are working very hard to avoid unintended consequences by methodically working through the complexities of all of these issues and policy options," Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) said in a statement. "We dropped end-of-life provisions from consideration entirely because of the way they could be misinterpreted and implemented incorrectly."

But they can still do it without it being in the bill, of course. Mandatory after-the-bill training...

Allahpundit over at Hot Air says this is a “victory for Obama” because now he can go tell everyone that the “end of life” provisions have been dropped, so it’s ok to support ObamaCare.

This is a big personal victory for Palin. If it wasn’t for her expert handling of this issue, it would have remainded as is. Now Palin has to move in for the kill, and eliminate the whole worthless thing. Blast the cost, the insuring of illegals, the whole nine years.

Post an indepth analysis of the cost, and the effort to insure illegals, and put it on Facebook soon. Hammer away at it, dump more gasoline on the fire of the townhall patriots.

I read those provisions and it seems to be misunderstood by people....

There is private insurance, you just have to join the exchange to be listed as an option.

The bill is bad, but let’s not say things that aren’t true.

We have to ask ourselves why was in there in the first place and what about the mandated abortion funding.

Whether these were in fact “death panels” or not, the fact is that we are all going to die some day. It helps to know what one’s options are. I have lost my mother, 89, from congestive heart failure; my father; 90, from stroke; and my husband, 75, from Alzheimers. They all had made wills, had advanced directives, and medical and financial power’s of attorney assigned. They were all insistant that they did not want to go to a hospital for end stage treatment. When she had been hospitalized earlier for some treatment, my mother used to call me a 3 am crying “I’m SO hungry”. She knew I would care for her more attentively. They all said they did not want IV or stomach tubes if their situation would soon result in natural death, and their wishes were respected.

People need some kind of advice about dealing with the end stage, if they don’t already know and understand what is involved. How do we get this to them safely?

You will wind up with the same bill, no matter what they say. This is BS, trying to pull the wool over your eyes. They will not pass the bill if we keep pressure on, in ANY FORM, and that should be the goal. Your way is defeat because they will simply add all that sh** back into the bill, count on it.

Don’t believe Grassley or any of them. They will try to get it somehow. The whole bill needs to be shut down NOW.

Exactly 100% correct, and that is what Palin was referring to.

This already exists. What planet do you live on that you don't know that? You can talk to your doctor anytime about end of life, but it is not mandated and it is not used to force old people into early suicide, which is what this "wonderful" house bill intends to do.

Only for now.

Looks we call know the growing government - over the years rationing will all be put in by policy not a vote.

This is the Senate version so who knows what will appear in the House version and how it will be disguised. Additionally the versions when approved by both Chambers will go to a combined house/senate Committee to rewrite the compromise version that both Chambers will pass sometimes without debate. So you are correct it isn't over by far at this stage of the game.

Even if they do modify the bill — and I don’t believe that for a minute — we’d still have to deal with Obama having complete access to our bank accounts, and a hundred other dreadful issues. The whole thing needs to be stopped forever.

It means they got cought in a lie and it proves that they are up to no good. Will they add it back and make it so hitler like we will never return to normalcy, yes. Will more more seniors wake up, yes. The dems are doomed without that vote.

Sarah Palin is most definitely to thank for this!

I just hope she continues to press the issue, calling out the President and every politician that said it didn't exist.

A small victory but what about the doctor, you and the health care expert panel? The panel can override any document if it isn’t cost effective. Then granny gets the pill instead of the pacemaker (they work really well).
