President hits town halls as backers prepare new campaign

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- President Barack Obama on Friday defended his proposed health-care overhaul before a mostly friendly town-hall crowd in Montana, telling attendees that there's "nothing wrong" with making wealthier Americans partly fund it so poorer residents can be covered.

"I can't cover another 46 million people for free," Obama said in response to a question about how he and congressional Democrats will pay for setting up a public health-insurance option and insurance exchanges.

Obama said about two-thirds of a proposed overhaul can be paid for by eliminating subsidies to insurance companies and other things. But he said the other third "wouldn't come on the backs of the middle class" and outlined a proposal to lower deductions wealthier Americans can take as a way of paying for some of the health-care reforms he wants.

Obama, who is facing some persistent disapproval for his handling of health-care policy, will also appear at a town hall in Grand Junction, Colo., on Saturday to pitch his plan, before heading to Arizona to see the Grand Canyon with his family.

Obama won Colorado in the election but lost Arizona to Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. Conservative groups are reportedly planning protests on Monday in Phoenix, where Obama is scheduled to address the national convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Attendees at Friday's town hall in Belgrade, Mont., near Bozeman, were mostly polite, in contrast to others around the country, where lawmakers have been aggressively questioned about the cost of reform and related issues.

A man did challenge Obama about the costs of reform, prompting the president's responses about lowering deductions and not being able to cover the uninsured for free.

"You can't tell us how you're going to pay for this," the man said in his question. "But you have no money. The only way you're going to get that money is to raise our taxes."

Just Wow.... and when Joe the Plumber accused him of planning to spread the wealth, he was massacred by the media. There is nothing in the constitution that says we have to pay illegal's medical coverage. It's expensive enough covering our own family.

That’s just how far we’ve fallen... there’s nothing in the Constitution that requires us to pay taxes either, but we all do.. start down that road, and there’s nothing to stop it..

This guy is transforming our country and hasn’t even proven he’s qualified to hold office. He thinks he’s going to cram health care down and then move on to immigration reform. We need to tie the two together at the townhall meetings and spread the word that we shouldn’t be responsible for illegals health care. That’s a big part of our broken system. Mexico is rich in oil and agriculture. Let them provide health care to their own people.

I think this thread has linkage to a video that I believe is what I saw on Kudlow and I mention in the note at the bottom of the article:
