Apologies top the agenda at United Church council

"Sorry" is heard often when United Church of Canada members meet en masse. Facing an uncertain future, brought about in part by internal divisions and financial constraints, the church is busy with remorse.

It topped the agenda at the church's 40th General Council, ending today.

Apologies were offered first to ab-originals forced to attend residential schools in Canada; some students experienced violence and abuse at schools administered by the United Church.

The church formally apologized in 1998 but the process of recognition and reconciliation will continue, said Rev. James Scott, the church's General Council Officer for Residential Schools.

"Reconciling, particularly in the case of serious harm, is more than merely saying 'I'm sorry,'" he said. Victims must be heard. They were.

There was formal recognition this week of an apology made in June, for the church's confiscation of Japanese-Canadian property during the Second World War.

....

Smaller grievances were aired this week, as well. Falsely accused of casting a ballot without authority, one man lashed out. "I just don't appreciate these accusations," he told his fellow councillors. "More so in the way they were done, because I was only informed the morning after, when I was, quote, punished," he said.

"I'm sorry," offered a church official. "If I said something that sounded like an accusation, I apologize for that."

Their foolish and hollow apologies are REJECTED. That stuff won’t cut it anymore ~ time for Canadians to learn to ante up and give it up big time ~ cold, hard cash in a bag, sent to me ~ I’ll tell you when you can quit sending.

The churches hardly matter; Christianity is taking the blows. And you can see that evil dominates every day, day after day. God save us.

Aye; very tragic whenever the Bride of Christ goes whoring around.

“Aye; very tragic whenever the Bride of Christ goes whoring around.”

The Bride of Christ doesn’t.

No St. Bernard of Clairvaux in that church.
