Gore blamed Hillary in part for his loss. Her 2000 Senate run diverted news media attention and Democrat donor money from Gore’s presidential campaign. But Gore screwed up by taking his home state Tennessee for granted. Gore led slightly in the polls here but Bush caught up with him in October 2000. Gore used to travel the whole state, knocking on doors in small towns, when he was a senator. But when he became vice president the White House security structure prevented him from doing that and he lost a lot of personal connection. The political demographic shifted during that time in rural areas. Conservative Democrats became outnumbered by Republicans but it wasn’t clear yet because Tennessee doesn’t register or otherwise identify voters by party affiliation. Gore lost by 3.8 percent. Tennessee has 11 electoral votes—winner take all. Nationally Bush won with 271 against Gore’s 266. But hindsight is 20-20.
Thanks for the refresher on all of that, I’d forgotten that Gore blamed Hillary in part for his loss.
