Series of Blasts in Baghdad Kill 50, Injure 300
Fox News ^ | August 10, 2009

Posted on 08/19/2009 3:16:31 AM PDT by Zakeet

A series of explosions struck the Iraqi capital Wednesday, targeting primarily government and commercial buildings, killing at least 50 people and wounding more than 300 others, Iraqi police told Reuters.

The blasts follow a string of attacks in Iraq this month that have claimed more than 200 lives and left hundreds more wounded, raising concerns about the abilities of Iraqi security forces to keep the lid on violence in advance of the American withdrawal.

The seemingly coordinated car bomb blasts and mortar attacks began around midmorning Wednesday, striking first near the Finance Ministry in northern Baghdad and then minutes later by the Foreign Ministry near the Green Zone.

The deadliest explosion occurred near the Foreign Ministry, just outside Baghdad's heavily protected Green Zone, killing at least seven and wounding at least 55 people, an Iraqi police and medical official said.

A 10-story building that is part of the ministry complex was badly damaged. The explosion was so strong that it also damaged nearby buildings and destroyed dozens of car outside, according to AP Television News footage. A huge area outside the ministry was covered by debris and broken glass.

The London Times is now reporting:

The centre of Baghdad was rocked by seven near-simultaneous explosions this morning, killing an estimated 100 people and wounding 250 more.

In the deadliest attack in Iraq this year, and the most audacious one in the capital for a long time, mortar fire and car bombs were directed towards the main centres of power. Among the targets were the ministries of finance, foreign affairs, health and housing, as well as the Parliament building and the Cabinet building.

Also hit was a checkpoint on the approach roads to the fortified Green Zone. The largest explosion was across the street from the Foreign Ministry and is said to have killed 59 people. The combined total of dead and wounded is said to be 350.

I do NOT understand why the military, seeing, knowing, what a reckless idiot omama is, don’t step up to the plate for the guys taking the flak. I know the commanders in Iraq have complained bitterly to no avail, but McChrystal in Afghanistan seems determined to put the safety of our troops far, far behind “sensitivity” towards the b@st@rds that are bent on murdering us. He should be court martialled for his malfeasance.
Where is Petraeus? WHERE is ANYONE with some backbone that will stand up to this, this, ......I can’t say it here.

Of course you would. All Bush bashers still believe that.

I believe they are asking the US to stay.

The easiest way to get the US troops out of Iraq is to stop fighting, Then we will gladly move out. Yet they keep killing.I believe they want us to stay.

“killing at least 50 people and wounding more than 300 others,”

To the American Left and the Media, this was only something to be concerned about while REPUBLICANS were in charge.

Now that DEMOCRATS are in charge, this is just a trfling matter they will somehow forget to cover in the same way they did under BUSH.

It makes me sick to my stomach to see this.

Kind of like child psychology? Negative attention behavior?

As for Bush bashing I liked George even tho he went all wobbly on social issues and spent us into a corner with the Iraq war after having his brain hijacked by the neo-cons.

His economic policies were pretty flakey too but I believe he did what Dad and Cheney told him to do. A classic people pleaser couldn't say no to anything.

I wonder what The Marxist Onada will do if the Iraqi government asks us to help them out in the cities. We bailed out of the trouble cities—Baghdad, Mosel and couple of others—too soon for Onada’s political goals.

If the Iraqis ask to go back I think it will be very interesting to see how The Messiah slithers out of it.

Too many conservatives have been conned into defending Bush, who wasn’t a conservative, but a rather incompetent “compassionate” conservative, whatever that is.

“Has Bush ever located those “weapons of mass destruction” he kept on talking about?”

Don’t even know why I bother responding to such myopia, but would you have rather have found out whether or not he still had WMD by waiting for one in New York?

If Bush went in that direction, and the worst happened, what would you be saying then? You’d be condemning him as a coward, because “EVERYBODY knew Saddam had WMD - why didn’t Bush go after them?”

Worst kind of hypocrite is the America-hating kind...

Iraq is the Germany of the 21st century.....it is a amazingly strategic place to hold. ( look at a map)

The weapons were there and they were removed, often times when we found evidence of WMA, Dubya, never touted it.

Was the war fought properly..........its up for debate I think it was not prosecuted hard enough.

I have friends over there.....and your flippant attitude is really not appreciated or constructive.

Hey, Skippy...

There were WMD in Iraq and Saddam was funding several aspects of terrorism. He gassed his own people, for crying out loud.

Why don't you go research what some of your fellow Democrats had to say about that very same issue in 1998?

Six American soldiers took photographs at the wrecked ministry and then quickly left. Later, an American officer, who spoke in return for anonymity because he was not authorized to brief reporters, said United States forces were constrained by the agreement under which they handed over security responsibilities to Iraqi forces at the end of June. “As much as we want to come, we have to wait to be asked now,” he said.

That did not assuage some Iraqis, who blamed the 2003 American invasion for their nation’s perils and woes.

“This country is finished,” said one resident, Jamil Jaber, 45, whose five-room home behind the Foreign Ministry had been flattened by the explosion, crushing to death a 4-month-old infant. “It’s just robbery and killing.” He then cursed the United States and former President George W. Bush.

Have there ever been less grateful human beings than the Iraqis? I am SOOOO glad that GWB brought “freedom” to these people. /sarc

Yeah, this guy who is in the throes of grief speaks for all of Iraq. Good grief; that's a New York Times tactic that they've used on the mindless sheeple for years.

What's your source, anyway?

The Iraqis have thanked us publicly and privately on numerous occasions over the years, but the state-run media sources you cite will never admit that.

For example, you weren't in Iraq on their first election day in January of '05.

Quite obviously.

It's now obvious that you're a DU troll and braindead, but my son had two tours in Iraq, the second of which was working directly with the Iraqi people every day for nearly a year.

I can tell you absolutely that the Iraqi people were deeply grateful.

Al Sadr's thugs were not. al Qaeda was not. But the Iraqi people trusted and respected the American troops.

I know that doesn't match your leftist talking points, but it's the truth.

Must feel great to be on the same side of the argument as the terrorists, eh steven? Takes the Biblical command to love your enemies to a whole new level. You become one with the enemy.

You must be SO proud.
