“Oh, yes I do”

Oh, no you don't. You see, "the VAST majority of the problems related to Hurricane Katrina" resulted from the failure of the flood walls, a consequence of negligence and incompetence for which the US Army Corps of Engineers has accepted responsibility in sworn Congressional testimony. As one who was here and dealing with it, I can assure you that "the fundamental and abject lack of personal responsibility and foresight on the part of the residents of New Orleans" had nothing to do with the disaster that overtook us. So kindly spare me the GOP talking points.

Credible? Based on what? Your “gut” feeling about politicians? WHY would Ridge publicize this? I’m not naive about politician’s personal motivations, but a little logic needs application here. The presidential election coming up raised the threat level by definition— multiple sources of potential threat to the security of the US in a time of power change. A review of the threat levels over the Bush 8 years does not produce at any time what you say was “wagging the dog”— it did not happen. Guess you’d say Cheney’s recent statements about rendition, and waterboarding and how less safe we are under Obama and Holder— these are all political dog wagging. Ridiculous. The protection of the citizenry is a Constitutional requirement of the Executive branch and George Bush, for all of his faults in judgement of people he appointed, was sincere in that duty. You minimize that responsibility to mere political expediency. How facile, and how false. From there would derive the concept that repeat “false alarms” issued for political expediency then produces in any future supposed real threat scenario, a public that thinks it’s all bull. Do you think that anyone who sincerely is warning the public of a threat level would want to dilute the value of that warning? Why even have a system if that were true? So, whom are we to believe— a RINO disloyal pimp like Ridge who has eaten at the public trough his entire life and has an agenda to reach out to the washington cocktail circuit and money? Or perhaps people of honor and integrity? I would not put this kind of behaviour beyond the likes of Ridge, Powell or any number of inside the beltway lying bureaucrat RINOs. We can certainly look forward to reduced “protection” from Holder and Obama as they change the war on terror into an adjudication process, destroy our economy & socialize our country. They would be the first to use the “threat level” to justify the creation of a gestapo, seizure of firearms and suspension of habeas corpus- once they’ve driven the country into the pits of despair (if we let them). It’s a great living flogging medals like Ridge and Powell,on the speaker’s circuit and putting out shameless books. We are supposed to believe the likes of Spector/Ridge and Powell on the basis of this disloyalty and falsehood. Richard Armitage for Secretary of State—— yeahhhh, man. Pimps, all of them. And, there is secrecy Ridge swore to, which he is ignoring. Time to clean all of the houses. Might want to check that cynicism vs. the reality of honorable keepers of the public trust.

GOP talking points my a$$. The cowardly, politically-correct GOP does not have the guts to point the finger at the generations-old, entrenched, entitlement mentality of New Orleans.

I’m not talking about the INITIAL failing of the physical infrastructure.

I am referring to the ongoing, PROTRACTED “victim” status of people who WILL NOT help themselves. Yes, the VAST majority of the “problem of Katrina” is those people who will not lift a finger to aid in the recovery of their own city.

Witness the huge dichotomy between the response from the citizens of Mississippi and those in New Orleans.

Sorry; it was you who alleged lack of "foresight".

As for your disgust with people besotted with entitlement issues: welcome to my world. I've been dealing with that too. But it in no way excuses the shameful way GOP sock puppets have used our tragedy to score cheap points. A plague on both their houses.

To repeat my point: Katrina would have been a one-week headline if the federal flood protection hadn't failed. They owe us for that (just an hour ago mailed off my NFIP renewal premium -- coverage not required of me, btw). The harm we have suffered at the feds' hands and the fecklessness of local leadership are two separate and unrelated issues. Those who attempt to link them are playing a dirty game.

He's lying:

Ridge says no plan to raise terror threat level

WASHINGTON, Oct. 30 (Xinhuanet) -- US Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said Saturday there was no plan to raise the national terror threat level in response to the broadcast of a videotape of Osama bin Laden.

Ridge said there had been no specific information indicating possible terrorist attacks, and state and local officials have already stepped up security measures as planned to safeguard the election.

"We don't have to go to orange to take action in response either to these tapes or just general action to improve security around the country," he said.

Ridge said the Homeland Security Department and the FBI issued a bulletin to local and state officials late Friday, but had no plan at the moment to raise the threat level at the federal level.

But Ridge stressed that his department reserve the right to raise the alert level. American intelligence agencies were still analyzing the videotape, which was broadcast on Al Jazeera on Friday, to determine whether bin Laden's speech contained hidden messages or clues about a possible future attack against the United States. I guess the Madrid elections incident earlier in the year of 2004 wouldn’t give cause for elevated levels, would it?

What is interesting is that on Special Report tonite, they showed specific quotes directly from Ridges book that completely contradict his own claim. They showed a number of paragraphs were Ridge claims he was never pressured to raise the threat level.
