I predict that as soon as employers can shed the obligations(administrative, seminars, HR, etc.) and GA costs of their current plans for a fixed “penalty” they will do so.

Health insurance will remain for the top executives, everyone else will be in the “public” i.e. only option.

The elephant is that why would a struggling business pay for the insurance as a benefit and also be penalized from the government when they can just say ‘go get on the public option’. The Democrats know this and that’s why they say that crap about ‘you can keep your insurance’ if you want.

Bull. They know it won’t realistically happen.

For me the public option boils down to one thing: it would be subsidized and could thus offer the same coverage as private plans but at lower cost to the customer. That is not competition. It is a government mechanism to eliminate private insurers.

It would be better if the government would just put more rules on the private insurers and make changes to increase the competition among them.

No.

It would be better if the federal government were to ban certain destructive practices currently in place as public policy in high premium states.

Some states ban underwriting (asking questions of the insured at the time of application) others allow full underwriting.

Free market is NOT more regulations.

I look at this one way: what is the benefit to me and my wife. Answer, none in fact when Medicare is in effect merged into Medicade, I lose. Therefore, I am not in favor of any change. As far as covering any non citizens, not only do I say no, I say Hell NO.

They’d better think long and hard on it.

Once enough of them are in the stew, the fixed penalty will be re-fixed.

They’d be better off continuing to offer insurance - plus a few other perks.

No, it would be better to have less federal rules on insurance companies so they could tailor the insurance to the needs of the individual. HR 3200 will be imposing massive new rules on the insurance industry, public option or not. The federal government will decide whether a healthcare plan is acceptable or not. If it doesn't meet the federal criteria, then the individual is taxed 2.5% of his gross adjusted income.

Small businesses—with say 8-10 employees—will either have to provide insurance to federal standards, or pay an 8% payroll tax. Most will elect to pay the payroll tax and get out of the healthcare business forcing their employees into the government option.

Right!

But what does this have to do with my comments regarding private insurers?

You can say that again, LOL! I was thinking almost exactly the same thing when I saw the headline...if FactCheck.org has bailed on Obama, he is really in trouble. I am loving watching the Dems implode and eat their own!

Factcheck.org and Obama are linked at the hip. And factcheck.org is used as propaganda to advance Obama's image.

I think what is different about this "fact" is that it is now directed at the left, not the middle.

I think this "fact" is trying to convince the left that the public option is not good. I think Obama is going to take the public option out of health care reform to save face.

As long as it's not illegal to go back, they will shed insurance obligations as fast as they can. All the extra BS that goes into offering health insurance is an expense. Private plans + hidden costs that are much greater than just paying a penalty...the decision is easy.

"As long as it's not illegal to go back, they will shed insurance obligations as fast as they can."

There's the rub...maybe the employer will be able to go back, but can you imagine them (govt) making that scenario likely without an extremely large "fee" being imposed? And being unable to comply financially, small businesses will be stuck.

"Private plans + hidden costs that are much greater than just paying a penalty"

The upfront savings to employers, comparing the imposed penalty versus private insurance, is a scam/come-on designed to "encourage" employers to dump private plans. The govt penalty (tax) will be upped as soon as enough employers have done so. It will happen.
