The much-trumpeted "reset" of relations between Russia and the U.S. was dealt a slap in the face last week as Moscow went on the offensive against Ukraine and Georgia. After Russian President Dmitri Medvedev waded into Ukrainian politics with barbed criticism of his Ukrainian counterpart's "anti-Russian" policies, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin embarked on a provocative trip to reaffirm support for Abkhazia, the Moscow-backed territory that enjoys de facto independence from Georgia.
While Washington insists that it will not recognize a Russian "sphere of influence," the moves by Medvedev and Putin place a question mark over the Obama Administration's ability to check Russia's determination to forcefully push what it calls its "privileged interests" in its neighboring countries. The flurry of diplomatic activity came symbolically on the anniversary of last summer's Russia-Georgia war, in which Moscow intervened on behalf of the breakaway Georgian regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
The reset, announced by U.S. Vice President Joe Biden in February, was meant to signal the rebuilding of the relationship between the U.S. and Russia that had soured under George W. Bush.

That didn't take very long.
Russia will do what it wants as our powerless sec of state makes feeble protests and O does nothing...
It is a reset. Ogabe is doing everything Russia wants, whereas Bush used to push back at every opportunity.
But the jOker promised that we would be instantly respected on 1/21/09 and even more respected after he dissed America for everything gone wrong in the Milky Way Galaxy.
You mean...gasp!...he LIED? Holy Aunt Jemima! Say it ain't so!
“Pantywaist”
Liberals are childish buffoons. Reset button my arse. There is little we could do except for get down and bow and grovel before Russia, Europe, and any other place that does not like the US.
Hillary's "smart power" ain't looking so smart so far.
determination to forcefully push what it calls its “privileged interests” in its neighboring countries.
We used to have something like that, it was called the
Monroe Doctrine.
What about “the world will love us if the Obozo is president”? Looks like the world is mooning us instead.
Well, it won’t be long now, as Mr. Bobbitt said when he saw his wife with the scissors.
Rick James: Charlie! There’s a new joke goin’ around - have you heard it? What did the five fingers say to the face?
I haven't even heard our Sec. of State protest. I think 0bama is starting to run scared on his domestic policy, and he is even more afraid of being rebuffed in the foreign relations area.
If he forces his Obamacare through on the nuclear option, then all Democrats are going to be on the hotseat come November 2010. I wouldn't even be surprised to see recall votes on the hardliners.
Who’d a thunk it, we elect the most inexperienced person, especially in foreign affairs, and expect him to handle, with the help of Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton, all these hot issues. They (ie. those who voted for him) expected 8 years of Illinois State Senate and 4 years as US Senator to prepare him for all that comes from being US President. We know how bad the JFK-Khrushchev 1961 Vienna Meeting went [Defcon2-Cuba], we are now learning how impressed Vladimir Putin was at their meeting; hint: I don’t think he was.
Obama will help usher in a rise in Imperialist Russia. His loss of face with Putin will not be wasted in the next two years. Expect more provocations and war. Putin has his chessmen all set on the board and he’s moving his pieces all the while Obama thinks he’s playing a video game. In the end, we will turn around and there will be a new super power and it will not be us.
