High School junior Lindsay Hull said she was amazed and honored to receive a signed letter from First Lady Michelle Obama recently, congratulating her on an award-winning essay about Martin Luther King Jr.
Hull wrote the essay last spring, and won $50 for it, but she said she never thought it would get even more attention.
Since then, St. David resident Naomi Comeau said she found the essay to be moving, and being a former member of the NAACP, she sent the essay and photo of Hull that was printed in the April 8 edition of the San Pedro Valley News-Sun to Clayborn Carson, an African-American professor of history at Stanford University and director of the Martin Luther King Jr. Research and Education Institute.
In a hand-written letter to Hull, Carson said, "Please accept my sincere congratulations for your award-winning essay on Martin Luther King. I understand from Naomi Comeau that your commitment to King's principles is deep-rooted. I admire young people such as yourself who seek to make the world a better place for all. I also look forward to the time when our paths will cross."
Hull's essay, which focused on fear being the ultimate cause of hatred, prejudice and violence, didn't stop with Carson. It soon made its way to the White House, where First Lady Michelle Obama was also moved.
The letter signed by Obama says, "I wanted to write a special note of congratulations on your impressive achievement. Your success is a testament to your dedication and commitment, and you have no doubt inspired others through your accomplishments. Your hard work has truly paid off, and I hope that this recognition spurs you to continue to lead by example for those around you. I wish you the very best in your future, and again, congratulations."

A week after a reported campus hate crime drew national attention, sparked protests and shut down the prestigious Claremont Colleges, police on Wednesday called the incident a hoax staged by a professor who slashed tires, shattered windows and spray-painted racist graffiti on her own car.
Claremont McKenna College psychology professor Kerri Dunn, who had told police that her car was vandalized as she spoke at a March 9 forum on racism, was identified by two eyewitnesses as the person who damaged the auto, authorities said Wednesday.
Professor Kerri Dunn vandalized her own car and then led "Stop The Hate" rallies on campus.
The text book case for HATE CRIMES irony...
Another hate the racist America diatribe. The Zer0’s prove that they cannot transcend their own prejudices. can anyone cite a positve American message from these creeps?
The international community has to be laughing at us.
Our enemies must be elated.
> The international community has to be laughing at us.
Nope. We are as confused by this as you are.
> Our enemies must be elated.
Nope again. They are incredulous: they think it’s a very clever trick and they aren’t falling for it. Not even Americans can be this bizarre: you’ve overplayed your hand.
I’m hearing from points abroad (and mainly surprisingly from Liberals,) exactly what you wrote, DieHard. Their opinions, more and more, are basically that the Obamas are nothing but angry and clueless crap-disturbing one-trick phony-ponies.
Obama had LOTS of supporters here in New Zealand at first, including our Prime Minister. Now, very few will own up to it: they look all embarrassed when asked about him.
It’s sorta like they left their brains behind in their haste to cheer on “America’s first black president”. Except there are persistent questions being asked about whether he’s actually American. And he’s not really “black” — he’s part-arab-half-white. And it’s not certain that he’s really Constitutionally your President — nobody checked him for ID!
Mind-boggling, enough to cause a migraine if we think too hard about it. Easier to smile politely and thank our Lucky Stars that he’s America’s problem not ours.
The truth is he’s everyone’s problem...
Not hard to get a congratulatory letter for Michelle Obama for writing an essay about a black man.
Try writing about Harry Truman or Ronald Reagan and see what you get from the racist White House.
MLK wanted people to be judged on the content of their character.
Michelle is the poster child for Affirmative Action, which flies in the face of all that MLK believed in.
“And she drives with pride”....”In a Yugo”
> The truth is hes everyones problem...
Sadly, you’re 100% right, and no mistake. What a shame not everyone got to vote in your elections last November: we’d feel happier about sharing the blame. For we will surely be sharing the consequences, as sure as darkness follows the dawn.
