Deeds' Speech Shows Contrast with McDonnell More Info
Creigh Deeds persuasively made the connection between public education and a strong economy today in a major campaign speech at George Mason University.
"This election is about Virginia's future: how we deal with the economic challenges we face and how we make our public schools the best and most innovative we possibly can," Deeds said.
The singular most important piece of evidence we have of the candidates' stance on public education is the historic 2004 bipartisan effort that gave a $1.4-billion boost to public schools. Deeds voted for the measure; Bob McDonnell against it.
As for transportation, Deeds reemphasized today that "All options are on the table -- except for raiding money from education." McDonnell's plan would take millions of dollars in funding dedicated to public schools and redirect them to transportation projects.
In comparing the candidates for governor, also remember that: Deeds has categorically opposed the use of vouchers or tuition tax credits (TTCs), while McDonnell has supported the use of TTCs, which would drain funds from public schools. Deeds has voted for and sponsored efforts to boost Virginia teacher pay to at least the national average.

Yea, right. Wait until the O’Cash4Clunkers administration takes over ALL state retiree pension funds to replenish the government bankrupted social security system.
What will the public education retirees have to say about their Messiah then.
Let’s see, Mr/Mrs/Ms State Retiree says...”$200 million for computers for little Susie and Johnny...and my retirement check was just cut by 50%. Well heck, I’m OK with that. It’s for the chilluns.”
Yea, right...
I saw a Deeds ad last night where he was channeling the “failed economic policies of George Bush” as a way to get votes. Evidently, he is adamant in his opposition to reinflicting these policies on Virginia. He was also talking about Mark Warner’s good policies. What happened to Timmy .... he doesn’t like what he’s done? Or Obama? Pretty pathetic when you’re STILL “beating the bushes” (pun intended) for votes.
Jon Corzine’s playing the same game here in New Jersey.
