For all the charity they professed in the name of Christ, they had little for Galileo.

Since I'm not Catholic, nor do I have any particular interest in stumping for state religionism, I have no interesting in defending "the Church" per se. Nevertheless, the notion that people have that the Galileo affair represented some great clash between progressive, forward-thinking scientists and evil, retrograde theocrats who were trying to "use the Bible to hold back science" is complete and utter hogwash.
