A New Jersey man with a lengthy rap sheet was indicted yesterday for preying on senior citizens in a months-long mugging spree through Greenwich Village and Chelsea.

The oldest of Robert Stewart's victims was 91, prosecutors said.

Paterson man held in robbery spree

BY KEVIN G. DEMARRAIS
Sunday, July 26, 2009

A Paterson man remained behind bars in New York on Sunday, ending what police called a one-man mugging and robbery spree that preyed on elderly residents in Greenwich Village and the East Side.

Police said Robert Stewart, who lives on 12th Avenue in Paterson, was arrested on Wednesday – his 51st birthday – as he was attempting to rob a 73-year-old man in the West Village.

It was the fifth mugging since late May authorities have tied to Stewart, police said.

Each followed a similar pattern, with the robber attacking his male victims at their homes in broad daylight, pushing them to the floor and taking their cash and wallets, police said. One victim lost about $400, but the police did not have details on the other three robberies.

In most cases the robber came up behind his victims at the front door, including one in which the victim held the door open for the robber, police said.

Four of the victims, who ranged in age from 61 to 91, sustained cuts and bruises, but only one required hospitalization, New York police Sgt. Coles Nieves said.

Stewart was arrested after a neighbor heard cries for help and detained Stewart until police arrived and arrested him, Nieves said.

He has been charged with five counts of burglary, four counts of robbery, one count of attempted robbery and four counts of assault.

Stewart, scheduled to appear in court Tuesday, is being held without bail, a spokeswoman for the Manhattan District Attorney’s office said.

WELL THANK GOD THAT THE VICTIM WASN’T ABLE TO DEFEND HIMSELF WITH A FIREARM!!!! Since NYC carries the liberal “logic” of the more helpless you are, the safer you are to it’s (il)logical extreme in disarming all but the politically well connected and the police, then just think of how bad this would have been if the victims were armed. Why the mugger might have gotten hurt!

New York, New Jersey. Los Angeles, San Francisco. There are places where, as you get older, just seem to be deleterious to your health.

Whew! Use of firearms might have made it a close-call for the noble mugger who is just trying to turn his life around.
He wouldn't be engaged in this gentle criminality if it weren't for the Bush/Cheney economy. [/sarcasm]

Two in the legs, one in the groin? That’s an interesting variation on the Mozambique drill.

If it hadn’t been for a private citizen who answered the cries for help and “held” the perp until the police arrived, this guy would still be out there knocking down 90-year-olds. And, you have to guess, he’s probably been doing it for the past 30 years.

There’s no way that the police can protect people against that kind of attack. And in places like New York, the victims aren’t allowed to protect themselves.

Antigun AARP still has yet to make the connection.

The antigun organization has forty million members. The NRA only has four million.

Which is why he practices his chosen profession in the anus of the east coast.
