Anti-Abortion Ted Kennedy, circa 1971
Catholic League (Web Archive) ^ | 8/3/1971 | Ted Kennedy

Poignant pro-life words from Ted Kennedy before he decided abortion was a wonderful thing:

While the deep concern of a woman bearing an unwanted child merits consideration and sympathy, it is my personal feeling that the legalization of abortion on demand is not in accordance with the value which our civilization places on human life. Wanted or unwanted, I believe that human life, even at its earliest stages, has certain rights which must be recognized -- the right to be born, the right to love, the right to grow old.

I share the confidence of those who feel that America is working to care for its unwanted as well as wanted children, protecting particularly those who cannot protect themselves. I also share the opinions of those who do not accept abortion as a response to our society's problems -- an inadequate welfare system, unsatisfactory job training programs, and insufficient financial support for all its citizens.

When history looks back to this era it should recognize this generation as one which cared about human beings enough to halt the practice of war, to provide a decent living for every family and to fulfill its responsibility to its children from the very moment of conception.

- Edward “Ted” Kennedy, U.S. Senator and former presidential candidate, now in favor of legalized abortion, in a letter to a constituent, (August 3, 1971)

So, at least at one point he did know better? Or was this just a bone thrown to a constituent before Roe came along and gave him cover?

Al Gore was once pro-life, too. But in the modern Democratic Party, that’s just not tenable.

Do you really think they don’t believe in their current route and are just following their interests?

Pro-life views do not mesh with the current urgent push for “health insurance reform”. Newborn babies are not productive citizens. They need constant care. They don’t pay taxes (yet). They don’t vote (yet). They hobble their parents from doing other things. They might turn out to be conservatives. They might be offended at being born with $9 trillion in debt load. Best to just snuff them out with taxpayer monies.

And then he sold his soul to the Devil. Or the Democrat Party. If there’s a difference.

I suspect self-interest is mainly what turns pro-life Democrats into pro-abortion Democrats. I don’t know how sincere either position ever was/is, but if they were strongly pro-life, they probably would have become Republicans rather than pro-abortion.

It would be interesting to see a list of all of the politicians that changed from anti to pro abortion for expediency.

It is hard to imagine any other reason for the change!

Kennedy was willing to see to it that innocent babies died in order to retain political power.

What a pathetic loser.
