A rather ironic headline, if I may say so.

17 pages . started out with the truths,
Ended up lionizing him for the last 5 or so.
I think a suitable burial would be chuck his coffin off
the bridge. I have no love for him.

Nearly twenty years on, regarding the downward trajectory from 1990, this article now stands as an amazingly poignant review of what can only rightly be described as a life-long human tragedy. Not a sudden tragedy like the World Trade Center on 9/11; but a slow, inexorable tragedy like termites eating Independence Hall, punctuated by the occasional resounding crack of important structural members giving way. Against that nature of internal turmoil, all of the drinking and carousing resemble nothing so much as vain efforts to drown out the steady agony of an accumulated lifetime of pains, great and small, relentlessly gnawing away on the inside where nobody else can see.
More than anything else, I think that Senator Kennedy's legislative legacy arose out of his own inner desperation to compensate for his own dismal self; to forge something monumental that others would associate more immediately with the name "Ted Kennedy" than the man he actually was. "Look at what I created, not at who I am," would be the true heart-cry that his mouth would never find breath to utter. By that analysis, a review of his legislative track record stands as testament to a truly tortured soul, indeed.
So, on the passing of the man, I express great political relief, because the long, leftist nightmare of his personal reign in the Senate has come to an end; but I express personal condolences of even greater and deeper proportions, because -- by all outward appearances -- his long, personal, unrepentant nightmare has not, and now never will.
Yes, we may -- and ought to -- pray otherwise, and I do hope I am wrong, but I sense that is not the case.
If there is anything that we, the living, may derive in the way of benefit from all of this, I think it lies in our own introspective answers to that question given more than five decades of fame by the pen of Francis A. Schaeffer, "How should we then live?"
