Reading through the Fox story tonight, I think he was caught at the University with her daughters, one being 15... makes me think she had the child at 14.

Oh, ok, I must have missed that. I wonder if he was sexually abusing them as well? Did they know who their mother was? These stories just blow my mind.

Her abductor, investigators said, raped her for years and fathered two children with her, the first when Jaycee was about 14. Those children, both girls now 11 and 15, also were kept hidden away in the backyard compound.

“None of the children have ever been to school, they’ve never been to a doctor,” El Dorado County Undersheriff Fred Kollar said. “They were kept in complete isolation in this compound.”

...

People who knew Garrido said he became increasingly fanatic about his religious beliefs in recent years, sometimes breaking out into song and claiming that God spoke to him through a box.

“In the last couple years he started getting into this strange religious stuff. We kind of felt sorry for him,” said Tim Allen, president of East County Glass and Window Inc. in Pittsburgh, who bought business cards and letterhead from Garrido’s printing business for the last decade. Three times in recent years, Garrido arrived at Allen’s showroom with two “cute little blond girls” in tow, he said.

In April 2008, Garrido registered a corporation called Gods Desire at his home address, according the California Secretary of State. During recent visits to the showroom, Garrido would talk about quitting the printing business to preach full time and gave the impression he was setting up a church, Allen said.

“He rambled. It made no sense,” he said.

Garrido would talk about holding events at UC Berkeley and mentioned the names of important people as if he knew them. Allen said he had no inkling of Garrido’s criminal record.

I would guess yes on both accounts. My mind too. Reading one of the links from Fox news. Police suspected step-dad; marriage didn’t survive. The damage to so many people, and lives. So tragic.

The backyard compound had electricity from extension cords and a rudimentary outhouse and shower, “as if you were camping,” Kollar said.

...

The case broke after Garrido was spotted Tuesday with two children as he tried to enter the University of California, Berkeley, campus to hand out religious literature. The officers said he was acting suspiciously toward the children. They questioned him and did a background check, determining he was a parolee, and informed his parole officer.

Garrido was ordered to appear for a parole meeting and arrived Wednesday with Dugard, his wife and two children. During questioning, corrections officials said he admitted kidnapping Dugard. It was not known if he had a lawyer.

I don’t think the lawyer question matters. Answering questions without benefit of counsel is a condition of most paroles, and most search related rights are waived too.

I wonder how many other little girls went missing in that area over the past 18 years, or longer, since it seems he was living there for quite some time. I hope the authorities give serious consideration to digging up that entire backyard.

The perp is trying to justify himself tonight, in a jailhouse interview...unbelievable...

Garrido told KCRA that he left documents three days ago with the FBI in San Francisco, California, that would shed light on the case. “They’re going to be a part of the trial,” he said.

A call from CNN to the FBI’s San Francisco bureau was not immediately returned.

Garrido said he could not go into detail about why he chose to abduct Dugard. “I haven’t talked to a lawyer yet, so I can’t do that,” he said.

But Garrido said he had “completely turned my life around” in the past several years. “You’re going to find the most powerful story coming from the witness, from the victim,” he said. “If you take this a step at a time, you’re going to fall over backward and in the end you’re going to find the most powerful, heartwarming story.”

He added, “Wait ‘til you hear the story of what took place at this house. You’re going to be absolutely impressed. It’s a disgusting thing that took place with me in the beginning, but I turned my life completely around.”

Describing the two daughters, he said, “Those two girls slept in my arms every single night from birth; I never kissed them.”

But in a later comment, he said that, from the time the youngest was born, “everything turned around.

"Just hang him. I know, innocent til proven guilty, yada yada yada..This guy should have been in prison a long time ago. He was already a convicted rapist. Our justice system is so screwed up"

How does a man on Federal parole/probation for kidnapping/rape have a women and two girls in his back yard for almost 20 years, and NO ONE notices?

He should get the chair, and a whole bunch of people should lose their jobs, starting with the probation officer.

He should be the first one to lose his job. What kind of an idiot was that probation officer. Do a google map and you can see the guy’s little tents in his backyard, but we are supposed to believe that this probation officer couldn’t just walk into the backyard and take a peak and see it. This bastard should have served his ENTIRE sentence for rape, but nope, he was released, what else is knew. Yet our messed up in the head Governor wants to release more then 30,000 prisoners to save money. How many of those prison inmates is the next Philip Garrido

How does the probation office and the agents who visit him not know that he lives on a two acre property?? That to me is mind-numbing negligence.

And why did the sheriffs come out to investigate the young neighbor's complaint the he had little girls living back there and do nothing, knowing he was a registered sex offender convicted of rape??? Some vigilant police they have up there in Contra Costa County!

I believe that he is weaving a defense, that he will claim to hear voices, claim to be schizophrenic. And for the past several years, he has taken action to make this defense seem real – because he knew that he could not keep this woman captive for her entire life. He came up with the idea of “inventing” a box where he could control the evil voices that told him what to do, and that he has gained control over his schizophrenia. And he went so far as to rent a web site, claiming as much, hired an investigator to gather signed affidavits from the owners of 5 businesses with whom he did printing. The affidavits say they witnessed his ability to control voices in his head.

Yep, he’s going to try to put on a great defense. I hope the good citizens of California are NOT forced to pay for the hundreds of thousands of dollars he will spend on defending the indefensible.
