Summer of our discontent: Why is America so angry?
McClatchy Newspapers ^ | 29 Aug 2009 | Steven Thomma

At the dawn of the Barack Obama era, the promise of hope has faded. America's public square is an angry and bitter place.

Finger pointing and yelling at town hall meetings this summer are signs of a country that's been building toward a boiling point for several years, stressed by a fast changing economy, a flood of immigration and threats at home by terrorists.

It's a land at turns frustrated and irate at a government that led them into an unpopular war, proved itself inept at helping its citizens in a disastrous hurricane, presided over an historic economic collapse, then went on a spending spree that could commit their country to decades of crushing debt.

Untold numbers of Americans seethe with anger at Obama and his fellow Democrats, resentment coupled with fear even more intense than the rage other Americans expressed just a year ago at George W. Bush and the Republicans. One telling sign: The comparisons of the president to Hitler remain the same — only the face has changed from Bush to Obama.

"It's ugly," said independent pollster John Zogby. "Ugly and sad because there were many of us who felt the ugliness could be transcended this time."

Americans throughout their history have been prone to periods of anger and suspicion against one another, particularly in times of change and stress. The anti-Catholic Know-Nothings of the 1850s, the rise of the Klan in the 1870s, the Palmer Raids against leftist radicals and immigrants in the 1920s, McCarthyism in the 1950s.

This anger is more focused on the federal government, a resurgence of the hostility toward the government that started with Vietnam in the 1960s and Watergate in the 1970s, faded in the 1980s, resurfaced in the early 1990s and then faded away again.

It’s going to get a whole lot uglier when the Pubies win big in 2010. I see an Impeachment of Zero coming round the bend.

It isn't ugliness at all. It is pure, old fashioned American rebelliousness against control by government.

Americans are an ornery bunch...thank God!!!

Uh, John, I hate to burst your naivety bubble but "ugliness" happens when people realize that the POTUS is a Marxist wannabe dictator and have the undeniable facts to prove it.

As Congress was debating the proposed regulation of emissions that cause global warming, Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., warned that people needed to stand up to the legislation.

or maybe if McClatchy, the rest of the SRM and the government were being honest and scientific about CO2, we'd have a bit more trust and respect for them.

” Why is it that non-partisanship is only supposed to be shown by conservatives, but never by libs? “

From the Liberal Lexicon...

“Compromise” = I get my way

“Bipartisan” = I get my way and you tell me how wonderful my way is

“Nonpartisan” = There ain’t no such animal

“Finger pointing and yelling at town hall meetings this summer are signs of a country that’s been building toward a boiling point for several years, stressed by a fast changing economy, a flood of immigration and threats at home by terrorists.”

Part of the problem is that we don’t really have a national identity anymore. ‘Nationalism’ has become defined in the most negative sense, and patriotism equated with being an uninformed or uneducated ‘flag waver’ who doesn’t understand the ‘worldly’ nuances as defined by journalists, politicians, and academics.

We’ve had lots of shifts in demographics, and we’ve taken the ‘melt’ out of melting pot. So people feel like they are losing their country because it isn’t familiar to them anymore. The democrat supported tactic of pushing the immigration of those who are most likely to vote democrat has contributed significantly to the shifting demographics, and ultimately is highly destructive to the nation.

I rarely read articles of this ilk anymore. What is apparent from my vantage point is the creeping power of the Federal, State, and Local governments since WWII. Uncle has his snoot into everything. Uncle has a say in the design of gas cans so now it is virtually impossible to use them in many applications. Uncle controls the pestacides that one may use on your garden and in you orchard for food exclusively for your own use. The have reached a level where they are no longer effective. Consequently, you loose your vegetables and fruit to Japanese beetles and to bees and other insects. Your labor is lost. Three to five million children die per year from malaria (a particularly horrible way to die) because we won’t spray with DDT (so some raptors won’t lay thin eggs!!).

We have seen the center of our major cities decay away, our heavy industries (with their jobs) move offshore (to countries that have nuclear armed MIRVed ICBMs aimed at the continental US), and our public morals debased to the point where TV and most music is not suitable for a reasonable person. We have seen instances of corruption on all levels go with no effective reprimands (legal or morally). We kill (some say murder) millions of unborn (mostly black) babies annually supported by public funds yet evening praying outside one of the murder factories nets a jail sentence. We have seen the Federal government take over and control major American corporations. How long will we let this continue in the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Damn, you are right. Sowell nails it again. Here is the money quote:

Those who were shocked at President Obama's cheap shot at the Cambridge police for being "stupid" in arresting Henry Louis Gates must have been among those who let their wishes prevail over the obvious implications of Obama's 20 years of association with the Reverend Jeremiah Wright. Anyone who can believe that Obama did not understand what the racist rants of Jeremiah Wright meant can believe anything.

When half the country tries to enslave the other half, is it really surprising half the country is angry?

I agree. The Kenyan is setting up a communist government, not fascist. America will be the Kenyan’s Animal Farm

I wish we could get Fox to run the various versions of Animal Farm. Light bulbs would go off.

We are still in the quiet before the storm. All hell is going to break loose.

Interesting to note. Americans are said to be "angry" in the 1960's 70s and 90s when Govt was being actively and enthusiastically enlarged and not angry during the 1980s when efforts were made to roll back and reduce the reach of Govt.

The writer at this state media outlet might want to consider the implications of that.

“There seems to be a reservoir of anger in the country of a particularly intense and shrill variety that it is not simply what's appeared at the town meetings,” said Michael Barkun, a political scientist at Syracuse University and an expert on extremist groups”

“According to Michael Barkun, many white supremacist groups of the radical right are deeply committed to the distinctive but little-recognized religious position known as Christian Identity. snip

In a new chapter written for the revised edition, he traces the role of Christian Identity figures in the dramatic events of the first half of the 1990s, from the Oklahoma City bombing and the rise of the militia movement to the Freemen standoff in Montana. Barkun also explores the government's evolving response to these challenges to the legitimacy of the state.
snip

In other words, the Liberal professor equates religiousness, conservatism and Anti Obamanationalism with being RACIST.

Ad Hominem attacks from leftist asshats only reinforce and validate my position that they are in the indefensible position of being wrong 100% of the time on every issue.
When they can't defend their position on facts and truth, they make up facts and attack and seek to destroy “the other side”.

Liberals will do anything to gain and maintain power, including consorting with the enemy. This is a well documented and recurring theme. In a fair and just society those politicians would be hanged for treason.
