Russia deploys missiles along border with North Korea

Tony Halpin in Moscow

Russia has put defences on alert along its border with North Korea amid tensions over possible new missile tests by the secretive Communist regime.

The Kremlin ordered troops to deploy Russia’s most advanced missile defence system, the S-400, to intercept any threats from North Korea’s nuclear programme. General Nikolai Makarov, the head of the Russian army, said that a mobile battery of 32 surface-to-air missiles had been put into operation in anticipation of any Korean tests.

“We are taking these preventative measures as a security guarantee against faulty launches of the missiles and to guarantee that fragments of these missiles never fall on Russian territory,” he said. “We are concerned by the fact that the site in North Korea where it carries out its nuclear tests is located quite close to the Russian border.”

A senior Russian senator said that use of the S-400 system could not be ruled out, but he rejected any comparison between Moscow’s actions and the decision by the United States to build a missile defence shield in Eastern Europe. The US argues that the shield is necessary to deter attacks by rogue nations such as Iran and North Korea, but Russia has denounced the plan as a threat to its national security.

Mikhail Margelov, chairman of the Federation Council’s International Affairs Committee, said that the US was responding to “non-existent” dangers, while Russia was defending against “the emergence of real sources of threat”.

"Russia has put defenses on alert along its border with North Korea amid tensions over possible new missile tests by the secretive Communist regime."

Why is it that we automatically believe Russia's explanations for everything. The true reason for the deployment likely has nothing to do with the fear of NK test missiles being mistakenly fired into Russia. In late July (2009), Russia conducted their 3rd set of war games in 4 years with communist China. They are more likely preparing to defend communist NK from an outside attack, imo.

You could be right.
I thought they would be offensive missile’s aimed at Japan.
The author needs to look at a map, and figure out a part of China, Manchuria, lies between N Korea and the bulk of Russia.
Does the Author believe Russia wants to protect the far eastern fringe of the Country???

When has Russia ever been antagonistic toward NK in the way you mean? North Korea was Stalin's stepchild NOT China's, since WWII. We under Clinton adopted them off the hands of Yeltsin because there was NO more funds to keep N.Korea in check. The 'Forgotten War', as it is call was because Stalin refused to let go of North Korea at the end of WWII, (per an agreement) and boycotted the UN. So the civilized world reacted under the UN and fought to preserve the South.

Russia putting defensive missiles on their border with NK will be considered antagonistic to the little pig. After all, what’s not?

From 2006...

“Western experts were not surprised that the two countries might be discussing sensitive military deals.

Nicholas Eberstadt, a North Korea expert at the American Enterprise Institute, a think tank in Washington, said that Russian policy towards North Korea had long been influenced by the desire to restore its Cold War-era influence.

“Russia often seems more ambitious to restore that influence than to play a positive role in international affairs,” he said. “We’ve got no reason to doubt that Moscow is playing a double game with North Korea. It’s not entirely surprising considering Vladimir Putin himself came up with the harebrained suggestion some years ago that Moscow, as a protector and provider for the North Korean regime, launch a North Korean satellite.”

Mr Eberstadt suggested that any controversial business deals would be politically costly for the Kremlin. “If Moscow wishes to be on the record as the sole defender and apologist for the world’s remaining revisionist and nuclear-proliferating regimes, then it would be interesting to see how its European friends would react.” “

That's a good point. I was just expounding the fact that even fishermen piss off the little tyrant.

If it is indeed *cover* for NK, that's another story. Let's see Russia's missile defense shoot down a tactical nuclear artillery shell.

IF you look the history of NK since WWII it has never been about ‘covering’ for these people. They are pawns for use by their keepers. These people have NO choice and are treated worse than pond scum, well except for the ‘leadership’. The leadership meaning the mental Ill exhibit the bloody Soviet style mind.

Now looking at the map, and given that our trading partner China has its ships filled with cheap merchandise for US to buy, and ever increasingly our debt, has to send chills down Russia's spine. Most especially when N.Korea was theirs until we adopted their ‘welfare’ off old Boris. I of course have not read all the agreements made under Clintonism and old Bill did not just go over to North Korean soil to pick up a couple of gals.

Since WWII N.Korea was Stalin's and by extension Soviet not China's. That is NOT to say China did not make agreements with the Soviets regarding N.Korea but they were not in charge. China fears more than anything multiples of millions of starving N.Koreans flooding their country and as we saw there is a border between N.Korea and China where Algores girls got pick up.

As Carville became famous for saying election 1992, ‘Its the economy, stupid’.
