The funeral services for two Virginia Tech sophomores who apparently were shot to death last week in the Caldwell Fields section of the Jefferson National Forest are scheduled for today in Lynchburg.
As of Sunday evening, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office still was seeking leads for the shooting, which they believe occurred either Wednesday night or Thursday morning.
Services for David Lee Metzler, 19, of Lynchburg and Heidi Lynn Childs, 18, of Forest will be held at Heritage Baptist Church, which both students attended.
Metzler's service will be at 1 p.m., while Childs' will be at 3 p.m. Each service will be streamed live on Heritage Baptist Church's Web site at www.hbclynchburg.com.
In lieu of flowers, the families request that contributions be made to Campus Crusade for Christ. Metzler and Childs were actively involved in this organization's Virginia Tech chapter.

A friend’s son and his friends—all about 17—love to go camping. I always worry about them these days. When I was a kid it was the thing to do to have fun away from the parents. What parent would not love their kid to go camping, but these days, you never know what nutcase will be watching.
What is it about Virginia Tech? It seems like every year at least one student is murdered.
I remember well the many years spent as Scout and Scout leaders and the great camping trips.
They weren’t camping.

Dev, my one and only is planning a week camping in Mongahela Nat Pk in WV - I am scared to death! He’s pretty responsible but I keep telling him that it’s the other guys I worry about - send a prayer if you can!
What were they doing then? (No graphic detail this early in the A.M., if you please) I’ve followed this pretty closely and haven’t read any thing to the contrary....illucidate, s’il vous plait....
One was shot inside the car, the other outside the car.

I was born and raised in SW Virginia, and my wife has family in Montgomery County, not to far from where this occurred. I have hunted and fished all over that part of the country. Most of the folks you meet in the National Forest are good. But, on a couple of rare occasions, I ran into some pretty unsavory characters. They may have been perfectly innocent, but I sure was glad I was armed. They just gave me a bad feeling in my gut, if that makes sense. I also ran across more than one dope patch - but that has been years ago.
We don’t know. But they were definitely not camping.
Many years ago, we had two Appalachian Trail hikers murdered nearby by a local nutbag. He got sent away but was eventually released. Then he tried to do it again but ended up dead in a wreck running from the police.
We have some possibilities in the Caldwell Fields case. Chances are that you can see the perp’s picture on the Sex Offenders Database. For a small community, we sure have a lot of sex offenders. Neighbors report an older car often cruising that road at night. I will guess that within a month, he’ll start cruising some “usual out of the way” spots e.g. Pandapas Pond, Poverty Creek, Boley Field. I find it ironic that it happened right after school started, as if the perp came arrived with the students.
I grew up in the deep woods, and never gave a second though—nor my parents—of spending days in the woods with friends. The last thing we thought about was human nutcases. These days, I have severe reservations about even buying a house in the country, or a rural area. At least the city and burb’s offer a sense of protection simply because there are lots of eyes watching. Maybe we are getting old and a bit paranoid, but never-the-less it is the way I feel. Prayers to your one and only...

Real safe tell that to the CA girl kidnapped 18 years ago. Cities and burb offer not protection, you must protect yourself and family.

I agree with you on the no camping thing, maybe a lover’s lane issue. If they don’t find this guy quick, he is going to strike again. I think he is a local who decided to go off the deep end. The local police are being very quiet on this one and that normally means they have few leads. I work in Blacksburg and people are on the lookout, but they don’t know what to look for.
A policeman told me that they’ve already caught some students “parking” at Pandapas Pond and it hasn’t even been a week. It’s a target rich environment.

Ok, now that I’ve got the tasteless joke out of my system, I hope they track down whoever is responsible for this. VT has had way too much tragedy as of late.
As a concerned Hokie Parent I have been scouring the news for days, hoping they have caught the monster who did this.
I don’t know if anyone remembers but there was a disgruntled employee, Beacher F. Hackney, who murdered two people at the Homestead Resort in March. At the time, it was speculated that he could hide out in the mountains for a long time. I did a little internet searching to see if he had ever been caught and found an article dated 7/21/09 that reported that he was still at large. He was from Covington, VA which is only 60 miles from Blacksburg.
Also, I was wondering if anyone knew if the FBI was involved since the murders took place in a National Forest.
My thoughts and prayers go out to both families and their friends. I pray daily that justice is served.
