LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Firefighters tried Monday to hold back a massive wildfire from consuming thousands of Los Angeles-area homes and a crucial communications center as they mourned two firefighters killed when their vehicle rolled down a mountain.
About 12,000 homes, as well as communications and astronomy centers atop Mount Wilson, were threatened by fire. At least 6,600 homes were under mandatory evacuation orders Sunday night and over 2,500 firefighters were battling the flames. On the blaze's northwestern front, two firefighters were killed Sunday on Mount Gleason near the city of Acton.

it looks from here as though there are two or more distinct fronts on the northeast end of Station. the darkest, widest plume is over near the escondido pass opening into the AV at Palmdale

Yup..yuck is right. I can say I’ve never seen fire this close before, though it’s still 20 miles south of me and there’s nothing but open desert between us.
The Station fire is creeping up on 100,000 acres charred. That’s unbelievable. Think of if you’re at the Rose Bowl, then drove up to Palmdale, it’s basically all burned between those two points. like, moonscape. And all that particulate matter is now aloft!

Update per KCAL-TV.....the authorities refuse to go in to rescue these people now as the situation is way too dangerous and they had been warned and refused to accept common sense and wisdom and how they are in trouble hunkering down in a cabin.

This would now be only possible by helicopter, thus needlessly endangering the firefighters involved in the rescue and taking that helicopter away from what it was supposed to be doing fighting the fire.

what they arent saying is that they were doing a firing operation also...and I bet those folks werent aware of that....
the Sheriffs were about to drive into an inferno to try to get to the people.

oh..these folks were evacuated yesterday and came back sometime this morning...
LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department says five people who refused to heed wildfire evacuation orders are trapped in a canyon and it’s too dangerous to rescue them.
Sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore says the four men and a woman refused to leave the Angeles National Forest two days ago. On Monday they called for help because they were unable to leave a ranch in Gold Canyon.
Whitmore says a sheriff’s helicopter had planned to help but the flames are too intense and authorities must wait for the fire to pass by before going in.
Authorities say three other people were badly burned over the weekend after refusing evacuation orders. Two of them sought refuge in a hot tub.
The 164-square-mile blaze has burned 21 homes and killed two firefighters.
