LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Firefighters tried Monday to hold back a massive wildfire from consuming thousands of Los Angeles-area homes and a crucial communications center as they mourned two firefighters killed when their vehicle rolled down a mountain.

About 12,000 homes, as well as communications and astronomy centers atop Mount Wilson, were threatened by fire. At least 6,600 homes were under mandatory evacuation orders Sunday night and over 2,500 firefighters were battling the flames. On the blaze's northwestern front, two firefighters were killed Sunday on Mount Gleason near the city of Acton.

Where I live, we’ve had little of anything but snow and occasional flooding but nothing horrible. We’ve had wind storms but they are NOT hurricanes, microblasts occasionally but not a real tornado.

Yeah, western NY really gets the lake effect snows and it can be pretty bad. Central New York not so much. We’re on the other side of Syracuse and the only lake is Oneida Lake. We don’t feel much from that.

Sorry, Kelly. You are really in one helluva bad mood. Sorry I even tried to alleviate that one. Talk about tornadoes. Whew.

We are in norhtern Chautauqua county, in the lee of Lake Erie, above the escarpment, so we get loads of lake effect snow. up to about 300 inches a year in the worst years.

But, we are on a hill, do not get any flooding, have wonderful summers and falls, and do not get sick of the snow until March. It stays white, and even in the worst storm, we do not get snowed in, because the mega plows do a great job of clearing it off the highways and byways.

The cities are a different matter. There is no place to put the stuff, and it gets dirty pretty fast. And, getting around all the parked cars on the streets makes plowing very difficult.

Rural upstate NY is a wonderful place. I wish we could divorce “downstate”!

Yep, they’re cold alright. But it’s really beautiful amidst the cold. I just don’t like the lack of sunlight at times.

Yes. A couple hours' drive north at least. here's a map -- it's between Ridgecrest and Bakersfield, in the mountains

I, too, wish we could divorce downstate. Sigh. We end up paying our taxes to keep NYC afloat.

We have wonderful plows and systems to keep the snow away from the roads. There are times when it is hard to find places to put the snow for sure. Sometimes roofs cave in but people should be aware of that and keep surfaces shoveled off. I’ve never had to turn back from dialysis because of the snow. We’ve gotten through three or four nor-easter’s. I used to hate the snow but I don’t anymore. It’s part of living here. It’s better than having to worry if your house is going to be blown away in a hurricane or destroyed in a fire. The Southern tier suffers from severe flooding now and then and I’m glad I don’t live there.

Read on twitter three people trapped near Gold Creek. Sending a helecopter to get them. They ignored evac. orders.

You know what—this is a fire thread. Why don’t you go start your own to talk about snow? Okay? Thanks.

I heard a FF on scanner telling a superior that a group of residents refused to leave, know the risks, and it’s now too late for them to safely leave. FF want to set a back fire and that was the nature of their being asked to evac. Command said go back up and get all their names, give them one last chance. FF said even they aren’t allowed up due to conditions, so those residents are on their own now. Mentioned Jack Johnson place.. maybe that’s a ranch name, or a resident name, or a street name.

Within 30 seconds I heard the same story on KFI. So they are getting info out fast. Which is good.

I think this story is unfolding around the Big or Little Tujunga area.

That must be the same story as in #93. Hope they make it.

Gosh I’d feel awful if a FF helo had to rescue me because I chose not to leave when it was safe.

BTW my friend in Juniper Hills tells me they are evacuating and that KCAL is on site interviewing and showing the scene

BUt you’ll notice that during Hayman we still didn’t resort as you said to liberal BS of what we could and could not cut down, even after Hayman. Yep, Colorado has no greenie crap like Kali. Wanna clear cut around your home, go right ahead.

“I suggest you keep your “Kali” wise ass remarks to yourself.”

Obviously reading comprehension is an issue with you. His initial comment was that the greenies prevent clearing for fires and claimed it was a western State thing. I said it is not as Colorado doesn’t have that issue.

So blow it out your butt. Don’t do lumping Colorado with Kali.
