LA-Area Blaze Size Doubles, Threatens 12,000 Homes ( 11:02 AM PDT )

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A massive fire in the Angeles National Forest nearly doubled in size overnight, threatening 12,000 homes Monday in a 20-mile-long swath of flame and smoke and surging toward a mountaintop broadcasting complex and historic observatory.

The fire was the largest of at least eight burning up and down California after days of triple-digit temperatures and low humidity. The Los Angeles-area blaze had burned at least 21 homes and was moving north, south and east through the rugged foothills northeast of the city.

Despite a lack of wind, the fire surged without letup by running through steep granite canyons and feeding on brush that had not burned for 40 years, fire officials said.

"It's burning everywhere," U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Dianne Cahir said. "When it gets into canyons that haven't burned in numerous years, it takes off. If you have any insight into the good Lord upstairs, put in a request."

The fire had burned 134 square miles of brush and trees by early Monday and was just 5 percent contained.

About 12,000 homes, as well as communications and astronomy centers atop Mount Wilson, were threatened by fire. At least 6,600 homes were under mandatory evacuation orders and more than 2,500 firefighters were battling the flames.

Do they know what started the fires this time? Lightning? Arson? Campfire?

Things I have learned in life:

The EPA and groups such as Greenpeace and The Sierra Club have all but ruined the forestry and wildlife in California.

With no firebreaks and no clearing of underbrush, out of control fires are an inevitability.

With no trees or heavy brush, due mostly to fires, then the rains of winter will cause mudslides in the spring.

Just another day in Paradise.

My son-in-law works for JPL in La Canada which is closed due to the fire, and my daughter in Burbank where she sez the air is thick with the smell of fire. Wish they would just move home! That state always has crazy stuff going on.

“no firebreaks?”

You oughta know better, Marine.

Most of this area hasn’t burned in ONE HUNDRED YEARS.

Add to your list:
Luxury homes will continue to be built in California over dry creek beds that become mile wide flood areas every three years.
Luxury home will continue to be built in inaccessible dry canyons that become towering infernos every year.
Luxury homes will continue to be built on steep hill sides that turn into rivers of mud every spring.

Devil Dog,

Forests around LA have burned since Moses was a Master Sergeant. In fact, the fire tower in the San Gabriels burned down in 2002. When I lived in Cali as a kid, there were fires multiple times during the year.

No one said we haven't had forest fires forever ...

You insinuated we didn't have “firebreaks”

From the official Inciweb fire report.

“Steep terrain, decadent old growth brush and hot dry weather are factors that drive fire activity.”

So.. it’s all a moral problem...

Why do the fire threads always turn into a huge fight about 15 posts down?

It might be a better idea to stick to the facts for the benefit of anyone in danger. I was thinking that FR might be a good resource in case Mt. Wilson goes up in flames and all the TV and radio stations go dark.

Why do the fire threads always turn into a huge fight about 15 posts down?

Because there are a lot of people who wished they lived in Cal, and are simply jealous...Others that think were all movie stars that live in Hollywood, are filthy rich and have orgies with teenagers when were not making porno movies...

You'll notice on the hurricane, tornado, ice storms, snow storms and flood threads it's all about, "Prayers for all"....lol..

But when something happens in Cal, it's all about, "We deserve everything we get", "we're stupid" "Why...we're all going to hell"...As the calls for death and destruction are frequent from the bucket mouths standing on the side lines suggesting the wrath of God is upon us...

And as the fires subside, the latest news dies down, all those pointing fingers hoping for death and destruction once again slink away.....

What a hoot...
