Any guy with some Negro ancestry could have been his father. Wouldn't even have needed to be Negro. Some Pacific Islanders are pretty dark as well, as are Australian Aborigines and some India Indians,
Of course none are as truly "Black" as a college friend of mine who was from Nigeria. I'm talking obsidian or pitch, not the dark chocolate color of most 'negro' people.
