American politics are rich with characters and stereotypesJoe the Plumber, Harry and Louise, Nascar dads and hockey moms, to name a few. But one persistent type hasn't gotten much attention: the Republican football coach.

Ohio State Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel was a donor to the Republican Party in the 2008 election.
Jim Tressel is a very good and respected man.
GO BUCKS!
As an Ohioan, I’d just like to say ...
I like my dentist. She’s cool, even though she went to Michigan and gave me a root canal.
A year ago, I watched the Golf Channel days before US Open Open and one of the commentators said to the other out of the blue “do you know how many of these guys are Republicans?” I forgot who replied but the reply was “I’ve known most of them for quite some time...almost all of them are. They all live in Florida because they dont like paying income taxes”.
Unfortunately, I’m in Ohio, a high-tax, nanny state.
Most of the High School Coachs that I’ve known where History or Science teachers. They tried to instill “self-reliance” and the drive to Do It.
None trained their players to expect Government to grant them a WIN!
You think that’s bad? I live in Mexifornia. Our city and county politicians are La Raza sympathizers.
Hubby and I (the great GOP_Harley_Guy) just returned from Vegas back to Ohio — it's hard.
I thought a lot of us here would find it interesting AND fun. :-)
Duh, almost everyone who is successful votes GOP. There really is not a choice in this day and time. You either vote for anti-American socialists or you vote for the GOP.
So unless you are a mediot or a loon or some living off others you vote GOP. Sad that we no longer have to parties competing for middle American votes.
It really is a great pic!
O-H-I-O!
I do think football coaches are largely self-reliant and goal-oriented so they are going to lean right because they know hard work is the only way to win a championship, or at anything. This they have to constantly reinforce to their players, many who come from poor backgrounds that are probably geared to living off the government.
Which probably is another reason why so many in academia despise sports coaches. Not only are they stealing attention away from academic pursuits deemed holier by the left, they are demonstrating to a lot of poor blacks that there are other options in life besides sitting around and waiting for the government check to arrive.
You missed the meat of the article...Mr. [Lou] Holtz, who coached Notre Dame to its last national championship in 1988, draws a parallel between the standards and rules that most coaches set for their players and the Republican vision of how American society ought to operate.
“You aren’t entitled to anything. You don’t inherit anything. You get what you earnyour position on the team,” Mr. Holtz said. “You’re treated like everybody else. You’re held accountable for your actions. You understand that your decisions affect other people on that team There’s winners, there’s losers, and there’s competitiveness.”
I’m soooo not shocked that Pete Carroll is a Democrat.
One prominent Republilcan they left out of the article was Joe Paterno at Penn State.
It sure does, Tony! :-)
Agreed! Great article!
