President Obama's speech to students outrages Oklahoma GOP legislators

Republican state lawmakers are sounding off against President Barack Obama's plan to address school children Tuesday.

The Democratic president plans to talk to school children in an address that will be streamed live over the Internet on the White House Web site.

State Rep. Sally Kern, R-Oklahoma City, said allowing Obama to speak directly to students is "indoctrination."

"No president, Republican or Democrat, should interrupt the education process in this manner," Kern said. "Our children should not be exploited this way for partisan purposes."

In 1991, President George H.W. Bush, a Republican, addressed the nation's students, urging them to avoid drugs, study hard and report troublemakers.

State Sen. Randy Brogdon, R-Owasso, said he is concerned because Obama is to address such topics as global warming, environmental conservation and other social issues.

"President Obama's topics are best left for parents to talk about with their children, not the president of the United States," said Brogdon, who is running for governor in 2010.

State Sen. Steve Russell, R-Oklahoma City, compared the president's efforts to speak to school children with indoctrination programs seen in communist countries and Nazi Germany.

"I'm concerned parental rights are being usurped by this," Russell said. "This is akin to something you would see in North Korea or under Saddam Hussein's Iraq. It attempts to create a cult of personality and goes directly against our personal liberties."

Knew this was not going to go over well in Oklahoma, a state that only voted 34% for ZERO.

This statement sounds like he KNOWS Obama is/was going to discuss these topics. I haven't seen that anywhere.

How talking about staying in school and working hard could take a whole hour is beyond me.

There’s only so much people can take.
That point has passed.

I wonder if that's even true. I've read that no president has ever addressed school kids only with a message sent straight into their schools during schools hours. No president should ever do that.

And those Department of Miseducation discussion guidelines sent out (since revised) to go along with the speech told everyone exactly what this was all about - propaganda to win young supporters for Dear Leader.

Great pic—from my all-time favorite Super Bowl commercial!

The news locals here in Illinois interviewed some parents, one was against it, of course the others were in favor of letting Obama speak to the children. One father even said that people should stop making it “political.” The stupidity never ceases to amaze...

We have tons of room in Oklahoma. You can drive miles around here and see nothing. We have ranches, small towns, large towns, cities, and a whole lot of land in between.

We have 68,667.06 square miles; 3,642,361 (2008 estimate); 50.3 people per square mile

78% white; 8% black; 8% Native American and Alaskan; 7.6% Hispanics (2008)

Every County went for McCain in 2008 and for Bush in 2004. Oklahoma has not voted for a Dem for President since LBJ and everyone I have talked to here regretted that vote for LBJ.

Very conservative state with a liberal Democrat Governor who loves Obama and was one of the first Governors to endorse him but he is term limited and we are about to get a Republican Governor. First time in State History that Republicans control both the House and Senate (first time ever for the Senate in 2008)

Conservatives are always welcome in Oklahoma — Liberals need to stay out of OK as they already control enough states.

Finally they are catching on to ZERO although Oklahoma only gave him 34% of the vote so we caught on before the election.
