Obama effort to get hearing with U.S. schoolchildren falling flat
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram ^ | September 3, 2009 | Jessamy Brown

President Obama has met with the pope, the queen of England and will address both houses of Congress next week.

But his efforts to get an audience with American schoolchildren for a pep talk are falling flat.

An Obama speech to students about academic success, to be broadcast over cable television, radio and the Internet on Tuesday, won't reach many Tarrant County students.

Most Tarrant County school districts will not make it mandatory viewing for students. Many districts say they don't have the technology to provide it. Others will give parents the opportunity to have their children skip it if teachers show it in class.

For many districts, the 11 a.m. speech conflicts with lunch and curriculum plans so administrators are opting against live showings. Many districts are recording the 15-to-20-minute speech for teachers who want to use it in class later or will post a link on their Web sites for students and parents to access.

The 63,500 students in Arlington schools won't be watching the address live. The district will post an Internet link to the speech and provide a recording for teachers.

Arlington Superintendent Jerry McCullough said the district didn't hear about the address until Wednesday around noon. Administrators decided it was best not to interrupt the regularly scheduled lesson plans and activities.

"We just decided that with our technology we can access it and use it later as an instructional resource," he said, adding that such use would have to be "appropriate to the district's curriculum."

Some parents have objected to the address, seeing it as an attempt to inject politics into the schools. Some families plan to keep their children home. The U.S. Education Department said Obama's speech will focus on goal-setting and working hard in school, not policy matters.(continued)

"He has worn his mandate out so quickly and thinly, he can’t be trusted to tell kids to stay in school and off drugs."

He has to turn to the kids. Even his supporters are deserting him. He's running out of audiences. You watch...jails and mental hospitals next. (LOLOL!)

***Also, since when are our schoolchildren required to “do something” for the president? That would be their assignment, if a teacher somewhere decided to implement the Dept. of Education classroom ideas that were sent out. This whole thing reeks!***

I’ve seen on a few sites that the libs have dredged up a speech made by George HW Bush in 1991 to school children.

In it he does ask “Write me a letter — and I’m serious about this one — write me a letter about ways you can help us achieve our goals.” What the libs fail to see is this was a request, but it was not a request for the children to single out and help the President. President Bush pointedly said “us” not “me”

President Bush also did not make lesson plans and ask the teachers to put pressure on the kids and check up on them later to make sure they were working on goals and delivering results that would please the President.

We haven’t seen what Obama’s speech to the children would have said, but you can’t make me believe that he wouldn’t have stuck some crap about global warming and being green in and President Bush did not put anything political in his speech.

"community organizing shtick is not going so well anymore. Hmm. maybe Alinsky has a chapter on what to do if you become a pariah."

I don't think Alinsky had any chapters on what to do if your demonstrating and agitating won the battle. All he knew how to do was push. He didn't know ANYTHING about how to LEAD once you got to the top. Isn't that just like a liberal? Write a book, and leave half of it out.

I'd still have a problem with this kind of speech and 'after speech' workbook.

MAObama wants the kiddies to OBEY him and pledge ALLEGIANCE to him.

He will continue to bombard us with this kind of crap until we submit. He's going to have a longass wait.

Our children are being forced to see a political view.

When was is 1962? Our children couldn't be forced to see religious view? Sit down and shut up Barry.

Our school district has very tight controls when it comes to absences.

My children cannot have a day off, just because. And if they are home from school because they are sick, I MUST take them to the doctor, to get a doctor’s note. If I don’t and they have an extended illness that I did not document correctly, then I could have a difficult time insuring that my student receives credit for that semester/year in school.

It’s about control.

I can’t just pull my kids out for the day because they will get sick this year and miss days, that I cannot afford to waste because Obama wants to talk to my children.

My best option is to have them removed from the classroom for the five minute speech.

If Obama didn’t have his own cult and wasn’t pushing Marxist Totalitarianism on the public in the form of Cap and Trade and Deathcare and wasn’t associated with the likes of Van Jones and all his other Orwelian ‘Czars’ and actually respected and admired this country instead of apologizing to every country in the world for everything we do, and came across as having some neutrality once in awhile, I don’t think people would have had a problem with this little speech, but alas, the sheeple have caught on and don’t trust him.

Huh? I guess you missed this last year. How could anyone vote for this smug, unpatiotic, arrogant jerk?

“Hmm. maybe Alinsky has a chapter on what to do if you become a pariah.”

The missing chapter is what to do when you become da man. Alinsky’s great at ripping a society apart—that’s what community organizers do, they come in and get people pissed off at other groups of people, always seeking a critical mass of disintegration. If only 30% of people in society are violently pissed off, it is impossible to keep that society going. That may be enough to disintegrate things to the point where the 30% can seize power. But it’s not enough to govern in a non-totalitarian state.

Hitler and Chavez took a small mandate and converted it to lifelong power—but they had to go totalitarian. I’m not sure the US system of checks and balances is ready to collapse so quickly.

Alinsky didn’t have many useful ideas about how to keep a culture and a society going except the standard utopian marxist bs. And that doesn’t work. Right now, it is no guidance at all. The standard marxist approach to this problem is to torture and kill your opponents and rape their women. That’s not much help when you have to convince a Montana blue-dog democrat to vote for single payer socialized medicine and the blue-dog actually has voters to answer to over whom Obama has little present control.

Ripping down and governing are two very different skills that almost never translate into each other.

Well said and worth reading post #36 again. This is a bunch of radicals who were able to tear down the system with a big assist from the majority of media.

Now they are the system and don’t appear to have a clue. Ironic.

The U.S. Education Department said Obama's speech will focus on goal-setting and working hard in school, not policy matters.

The only slight reason I would have liked for this to have gone ahead before a lot of hoopla is to see what Obama's speech, as originally composed, would have been so that the outrage could have been greater after the fact. Now Obama and Co. have changed the speech and the lesson plan and we will never know how much more blatant he would have been. Now "help the President" has been changed to "Thinking about educational goals." Does a third grade kid have the ability/maturity to decide educational goals? Just a bunch of BS.

That being said, in the end this whole episode has put many parents on notice and that's a plus.

At the same time the question never asked is why this was never done by a President before. We know why any Bush speech would have been shot down (by the teachers) but, historically speaking, why did Clinton never even try this?

In the end the real folly was to be the first to give such a speech AND then have an outrageous lesson plan with activities to last for months. Bottom line: the outrageous lesson plan belied the real intent.
