Schools to Big Brother Barack: Stay Out!
Time ^ | Friday, Sep. 04, 2009 | Tim Padgett

Posted on 09/04/2009 5:38:26 PM PDT by nickcarraway

When Barack Obama won Florida last November — the first Democrat to take the Sunshine State since FDR — many saw it as a sign of centrist GOP Governor Charlie Crist's moderating influence. But lately, Florida's disgruntled Republicans aren't looking very moderate. This week, in fact, the peninsula's GOP registered arguably the loudest outcry over the education speech President Obama plans to deliver to U.S. primary and secondary students via webcast and C-Span next Tuesday. In perhaps the most over-the-top performance, state Republican Chairman Jim Greer called it an attempt to use "our children to spread liberal propaganda" and "President Obama's socialist ideology."

Thanks in large part to the Administration's ham-handed advance work, the strident conservative anger that erupted this summer over health-care reform has shifted from town halls to school halls. On the surface, Obama's intentions for Tuesday seem nothing more threatening than a presidential pep talk about taking education seriously. But some ill-advised prep material from the Education Department — like suggestions that teachers have students write letters on "how to help the President" and recommendations that those pupils read his books — has left the door ajar (and that's all it seems to take these days) for Republican charges that Obama "wants to indoctrinate our kids," as Clara Dean, GOP chairwoman of Florida's Collier County, puts it. (Read Joe Klein on Barack Obama's August to forget.)

The public school systems in both Collier and next-door Lee counties, a conservative pocket in southwest Florida that includes Naples, announced Thursday that their students won't be seeing Obama's speech.

Is the author of this piece an idiot? Clinton won Florida in 1996, Carter won it in 1976, LBJ won it in 1964, and Truman won it in 1948.

Uh. Truman '48, Johnson '64, Carter '76, Clinton '96.

To the latter, no it isn't. Let it run.

It will set the precedent for TOTAL CONTROL whenever we conservatives regain power. Except it won't be "CONTROL", it will be "FREEDOM" -- no more liberal garbage ever. We can expunge that poison forever from our schools, "our" news media, from our courts and our government.

How many school officials would be willing to bet their jobs that President Obama doesn’t say anything political? Would they be willing to resign if their guarantees are viewed as false?

Unless memory fails.. former presidents' messages for school children were about America not themselves. No speech was self-serving, it was about America and the kids.

Were children ever asked to write about being inspired by the man? Serve the man?

Did Reagan ever claim that that "shining city on a hill" was his creation?

All the other presidents were about America! America! America! America!

Obama would not likely deign to lower himself -- he'd have to go back on the apology tours and apologize for himself this time.

If he’s smart, he’s spending the weekend rewriting the speech to take out anything political. It will be the next speech and the rest that will slowly pull the kids along.

Ah, dear sir, you forget that most “journalists” today are probably an average age of 25 and a product of our wonnerful, wonnerful, U.S. edukacional sistim where histry ain’t no longer nesscary.

I’ll bet this journalist can tell you how many acres of rain forest are ‘lost’ each year, as well as the importance of saving every snail darter on the planet, and eating only organic food, and driving a Prius, and, and, well, you know, IMPORTANT facts.

I haven't even clicked on the link and I see three places where this so-called "journalist" is supremely inept:

1. In perhaps the most over-the-top performance, state Republican Chairman Jim Greer called it an attempt to use "our children to spread liberal propaganda" and "President Obama's socialist ideology." "Over the top"? Does this writer not recognize propoganda when he sees it?

2. Thanks in large part to the Administration's ham-handed advance work, the strident conservative anger that erupted this summer... Ah. It isn't about what Obama is DOING, it's about how ham-handed he's been in implementing it. Right, BRIGHT BOY writer for Time! You've really got your finger on the pulse -- NOT!

3. .... and recommendations that those pupils read [Obama's] books. Ah ... er, no, Mr. Pseudo-Newsman, though it probably seems a fine point to you, it should be "recommendations that those puplils read books about Obama," specifically ones written for very young readers in early grades, which are pure propoganda (as have been discussed elsewhere on Free Republic).

Limbaugh and Zeigler are right. This is media malpractice, professional malpractice. Shame on the advertisers that make such media malpractice tenable.

ACORN and obama’s security force say that Conservatives will never take control. The only Conservatives will take control is to beat them in the street. From what I have seen, Conservatives don’t have the stomache for that.

Don’t give them an excuse is the cry. well, when they get ready to mobve they won’ need an excuse. Anything that happens, according to the media, is always the Conservative’s fault.

Yes we have to stop these liberal ass clowns and Obama (the biggest ass clown of all) before we start having All-Barack ALL night and day, I am so sick of him as it is. Did you also notice, that post office commercial? In it there is a postal worker that I swear they chose because he looks just like Obama, he even stands likes him and has the same build...another form of Barack mind control. Maybe it is a sign though, because that is the only kind of job Barack is qualified for. Maybe he can get that job when we impeach his ass.

Thanks in large part to the Administration's ham-handed advance work...

Well, yes. Given that that advance work included a lesson plan mandating that the kids write a letter to themselves detailing how they could help the President, that is at least ham-handed. That isn't a pep talk about studying harder. It isn't an exhortation to stay in school. It isn't a celebration of the value of education. It's a demand for the sort of self-criticism that is so very popular at re-education camps populated by political prisoners. If the author is implying it's silly to be concerned about that he simply isn't very intelligent.
