Republicans have their senior's bill of rights, trying to win the elderly to their side in the health care debate.
Democrats retaliated this evening with a new TV ad that accuses the GOP of wanting to kill Medicare, the main government health program for seniors.
The Democratic National Committee cited a vote earlier this year in the House in which 137 Republicans voted for a budget proposal offered by the Republican leadership that the DNC says would have ended Medicare for Americans under age 55. Instead, the proposal called for younger workers to enroll in private plans and receive subsidies equal to the average Medicare benefit.
"Republicans want to end Medicare," the announcer says in the spot. "You heard right, Republicans actually voted to abolish Medicare for future generations -- one of the most important programs for seniors."

They tried this scare back in 95 when they took Mr. Newt's comments totally out of context, remember John Lewis on the Floor? "They're coming for the old! They're coming for the poor! They're coming for the chil'ren!!"
Tell a lie, repeat it often, etc., etc., etc.

End new enrolments t Medicare for anyone now under 50 or 52. End any mandatory features of Medicare. Do something analogous for Medicade. If the subject were to come up in COngress with only the choices of killing it altogether immediately or leving it alone I would have to vote for killing the beast immediately. I say this as one very close to the Medicare age who has not much resources for medical care. I feel that my "declining" years would be better if government medicine simply ceased for all but service connected vets, and if our "insurance" system were to have a couple of changes in it, primarily to remove the tax advantage of employer provided insurance altogether. If we could do these things and go to loser pays for tort reform, medical costs in this country could easily decline by two thirds.

Medicare is bankrupt. And it will continue to consume more and more of the federal budget. By 2014, 45% of all Medicare costs will be paid by the General Fund.

The problem is that your own insurance will consider Medicare to be your primary insurance. They will not want to pay for something that Medicare will pay for.

With 45 million on Medicare now and the number of Americans 65 or older expected to increase to one in five by 2030 (or twice the number of today), I seriously doubt that we will be getting rid of Medicare anytime soon.

I'm already a socialist.. i.e. +65...
I just admit it.. Don't want to be but the democrats forced the issue long long ago.. SAA was not designed to be socialist but the democrats stole the "trust fund".. which was under funded to begin with.. SAA was supposed to be an invested trust..

It will survive in some form or another. I think it will be means tested and benefits will be reduced. Right now Medicare reimbursement rates are about 70% of market rates, which is why some doctors don’t accept Medicare patients and why nine out of ten Medicare recipients have private, supplementary insurance.
