Job outlook hits worst-ever level

Employers' hiring plans at lowest point in Manpower survey's history

Hiring plans for the upcoming fourth quarter dropped to their lowest level in the history of Manpower's Employment Outlook Survey, which started in 1962.

A net -3% of employers said they'll hire in the fourth quarter, down from -2% in the third quarter, on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to the Milwaukee-based firm's survey of more than 28,000 employers. Before this year, the survey's previous low point was a net 1% hiring outlook for the third quarter of 1982.

A link to another article from your story post says these are the Top Ten places where you WON’T find a job:

“D.C. leads the rankings, followed by Jacksonville, Fla., which has three job postings for each unemployed person. Baltimore; Salt Lake City; New York City; San Jose; Hartford, Conn.; Oklahoma City; Austin, Texas; and Boston round out the top ten.”

Washington DC is the worst.

I don’t believe a word of it. NEWSWEEK told us the “Recession” was SO OVER and CNN has been screeching about the wonderful Obama stock market, etc.. Ignore the 9.7 percent unemployment and the lack of jobs (Jon BonJovi and Springsteen won’t be singing about Allentown or any other hard-hit place); we can now celebrate the “recovery” because the state-run media told us we’re in one.

Any rational business person can see what’s on the horizon.

Cap N Tax
Higher federal income tax rates
Higher state taxes
Mandated health care payments
Massive new regulations from scores of czars

No wonder they’re being careful with hiring plans.

They're all overseas.

Except most of the DC hirings are with the government, which is presumably not in the survey—and they’re ramping up like crazy!

Exactly. But do we have any strong Republican politicians hammering home this point, let alone a concerted reinforcement of the theme, as Democrats would orchestrate?

Of course not!

This is why I can’t understand how our economy is improving, as many are predicting. Our economy is 70% consumer based, and if people don’t have jobs, how can they consume?

Part of the problem is that 70% of our economy is consumer based. Manufacturing is not getting better. It is getting more efficient by the books, but that is only because it has stopped growing. Capital projects have been cut to below substain levels instead of growth. This makes the books look better because less man-hours are being billed to implement growth. The company I work for has cut our capital spending 60%.

Now with a union guy as the manufacturing czar we are screwed for sure.

This is BS!!! Manpower is projecting -3 because nobody wants their lame brand of engineers, scientists, clerical workers, etc.! It’s Manpower’s fault!! In fact, Manpower is laying off themselves, so in effect they are self-fullfilling their own dismal prophesy of high unemployment.

Blinkers/blinders on, full steam ahead!! s/

I am extremely bitter. We have a terrible government with horrible representatives that are too afraid to go on record as opposed to a black President. There is going to be war, I think, before all is said and done.

Employers who know what they are doing, manage to produce more with fewer employees. That is increased productivity which should be the goal of every employer.

Since they will not be hiring more, the goal for government should be to encourage the expansion of businesses and for the start up of new companies so as to hire the unemployed.

This done by reducing taxes and removing obstacles for the formation of additional private industry.

At he moment government is doing everything possible to stifle the private sector.
