US President Barack Obama has warned Congress that more Americans will die if it does not act now on health care, seizing the spotlight at a pivotal moment for his embattled reform drive.
In a rare joint address to Congress that marked the biggest test of his leadership so far, Mr Obama bluntly warned he would not waste time working with Republicans bent on defeating his plan to damage him politically.
"I am not the first president to take up this cause, but I am determined to be the last," Mr Obama said.
Months of charges by conservatives that he is trying to impose a "socialised" state-run health system have hammered his once sky-high approval ratings, but Mr Obama used the speech to say "the time for bickering is over".
"The time for games has passed. Now is the season for action. Now is the time to deliver on health care," he said.
If Washington again did nothing to change a system that leaves up to 47 million Americans uninsured, the deficit would grow and more families would go bankrupt, Mr Obama said.
"More Americans will lose their coverage when they are sick and need it most and more will die as a result."
Sharpening his rhetoric, Mr Obama warned Republicans he would not hold up his plan just to appear bipartisan.
"I will not waste time with those who have made the calculation that it's better politics to kill this plan than improve it," he said.
"I will not stand by while the special interests use the same old tactics to keep things exactly the way they are.
"If you misrepresent what's in the plan, we will call you out. And I will not accept the status quo as a solution. Not this time. Not now."
Republican assaults in August firmed up an impression in the White House that Republicans had taken a strategic decision to defeat health care reform in a bid to cripple Mr Obama's young presidency.
Passing health care reform would put Mr Obama in rarefied political company with an achievement that has confounded reforming US presidents for decades.
But failure could embolden Republicans and hamper his hopes of building a coalition to pass an ambitious agenda including a global warming bill, especially with mid-term congressional elections looming next year.
Mr Obama argued for the controversial concept of including a government-run component in the plan, a move opponents say is the thin end of a wedge leading to a state-run national health service.
Some have even suggested that so-called "death panels" or governmental agencies could be created to cut off care for critically ill people as a cost-cutting measure.
But backers of the public option say it would simply compete with private insurers to widen coverage and bring down costs.
Republican congressman Charles Boustany says Mr Obama should abandon his ambitious plans and "start over" with more input from his critics.
Mr Boustany, chosen to deliver the Republican response to the president's speech, said his party agreed with Mr Obama that Americans were hungry for healthcare reform, "but they want their elected leaders to get it right".
"It's time to start over on a commonsense, bipartisan plan focused on lowering the cost of health care while improving quality," he said.
"Replacing your family's current health care with government-run health care is not the answer. In fact, it'll make health care much more expensive."
Our message:
"I will not waste time with those who have made the calculation that it's better politics to kill this plan than improve it," he said.
Translation: I don't give a damned what the Republicans have to say. I am going to ram this down your throats whether you want it or not!
As an employer I was not moved by The President’s speech. I have seen my business grind to a halt as this economy is on life support and creating more ways to tax my business will put more folks on welfare in the fourth quarter.
Good jobs are leaving America as the democrats want to tax business to death. Add on Cap and trade and other issues and America is done as a capitalist nation.
I don’t need to provide jobs for almost 300 employees when I have enough for my immediate family for a couple of generations. But my family has run this Business for over 85 years employing hard working Americans.
Does my congressman or my President really care about the 300 employees?
I care for them as that is why I keep my family business open. I know the names of the husbands, wifes, kids and grandkids.
Mr. President should I stay in business or do you tax my business out of business?
How many jobs has he saved?
No baby killing
no illegal aliens
open to tort reform.
Not bad folks. Even self sustained insurance coop not bad for the small number without health insurance.
I think we are about to embark on constructive solutions.”Progressives” are destroyed. Did you here their outrage? Wonderful speech.
That’s exactly what he means, but ya know the good apt about that?? If he cant ram this down our throat he is a lame duck for the next 3 1/2 years.
DOES ANYONE BELIEVE THAT BRAVO SIERRA?
Can you possibly trust or believe after the stimulus, bail-out, and Cash fro Clunkers fiascos that this is what will happen?
No.
Read the bill the Democrats put forward. it is a HUGE government bureaucracy.
...and, it will lead to giovernment officials deciding the standards for who gets coverage when...basically...death panels.
Nothing but blue sky!
If this was about the uninsured then they should just fix the one or two items and then get back to us with the results in 10 years with a progress report.
After listening to the speech, there is no guaranty of anything that was being stated, other than Government meddling, new regulations more taxes!!!
Further, any time the Government gets into the business of making decisions, they leave it up to bureaucrats which have plenty of administrators, meetings and group decisions; therefore there will be means testing created by panels of Government members and Friends of Government so is he lying now or will everyone be lying later? Just think of all the times that Congress has made promises then changes everything as a generational or circumstantial imperative.
Obama is the worst of Clinton, plus the worst of Carter.
He has already lost momentum and passed the window of opportunity. The Republicans need to say NO to 100% of this bill and not allow the Rats to implement it a piece at a time.
