9/11 terror attacks remembered in New Zealand

Tributes will be held around New Zealand on Friday, in memory of those who lost their lives in the September 11 terror attacks in New York, eight years ago.

A memorial will be held at Christchurch's Firefighters Reserve, while in Auckland, 60 fire fighters will climb the floors of the BNZ Tower.

Nearly 3,000 people died in what was the world's worst terrorist attack after the hijacking of four passenger jets in the US.

Two planes brought down New York's iconic Twin Towers. Another plane flew into the Pentagon and United flight 93 crashed into a field after passengers tried to overpower the hijackers.

Rebuilding of the World Trade Centre

On the site where the Twin Towers and other World Trade Center buildings stood, plans are underway for four skyscrapers including One World Trade Center, formerly called the Freedom Tower, which will be the size of one of the former Twin Towers but with a much taller antenna.

It will become one of the tallest buildings in North America.

There will also be a memorial and museum with reflecting pools built on the footprints of the Twin Towers and waterfalls cascading into a subterranean visitor space.

Meanwhile in the US it’s racist to remember it.

New Zealand has always honored Americans for what the US soldiers, sailors and marines did during World War II...

Alan Beaven, one of the heroes of United Flight 98, was a New Zealander — I believe he was the only New Zealand national to be lost on September 11 2001.
