Chief apologizes over address

Denton schools Superintendent Ray Braswell offered a public apology Tuesday night to residents upset about his decision not to air President Barack Obama's address to schoolchildren.

He made the statement during the open forum segment of the district's board meeting.

"For the folks who think this decision may have been disrespectful, please know that I offer my sincerest apologies – that was never my intent," Braswell said. "My intent the entire time was to try to make sure the instructional climate was preserved so that teachers could teach and kids could learn."

Braswell issued a letter on the district's Web site last Thursday stating that Denton schools would not air the speech. He based the decision on such concerns as it being broadcast during some students' lunch periods and doubts that district technology was capable of streaming the speech live to all classrooms.

He said it was not a decision he wanted to leave in the hands of his faculty. There was no doubt that there would have been parents and students on both sides of the issue, he said.

“For the folks who think this decision may have been disrespectful, please know that I offer my sincerest apologies ...”

Don’t you love these statements about “if I offended you I apologize” ?

He should assure them that when Jim DeMint or Sarah Palin becomes President, he will show their speeches to schoolchildren in the classroom during school time.

I graduated from Denton High School in 1974. There was only one High School there at the time.

This superintendent sounds like he was simply saying that he was sorry if people took it wrong and thought it was disrespectful...but then went on to explain the reasons he did what he did...and I did not see him apologize for those.

For me, the President of the United States has no business whatsoever addressing school age children across the nation.

The parents must remain in control of the education of their children and that best occurs closest to the parents in the school district where members of school boards, commissioners, and others are elected and where teachers are hired.

Any message outside of regular, approved curricula (which the parents through PTAs, their schoolboards, and other avenues should always be involved with) should either not be broadcast or should have a clear representation of what it will be explained to the parents beforehand so they can opt out if they so desire.

In any case, we do not hire Presidents to be teachers or guest speakers to our children. I oppose it on principle because it smacks, from whatever source, of "youth indoctrination."

If you open the door for one side to do it, the other most certainly will too. So, since there is nothing in the constitution that can be remotely twisted into having this be the duty or job of the President, he should not go near it and do the things he was hired to do.

Just my opinion.

Exactly! Make a decision and stick with it - obama types are going to find some way to be offended no matter what. This apologizing nonsense needs to stop.

Agreed. I know this has been discussed to death, but it bears repeating: the jOker is a narcissist, a junkie whose drug of choice is worship. As such, that drug coming from adults has been 'stepped on', so now he needs a more potent fix.

He didn’t apologize really, just for any offense caused.

I went to a Catholic Prep School in the early 60's, through no fault of my own, and I was subjected to eight hours a day of dear old Sainted John.

Politics do not belong in schools, theory yes, party NO.
