HAVANA (AFP) – Cuban Vice President Juan Almeida Bosque, a revolutionary commander who fought alongside Fidel Castro to bring down a pro-American dictatorship, has died. He was 82.

An official communique issued through state media said Almeida, the number three official in the Americas' only communist regime, died late Friday from cardiac arrest.

Almeida was one of just three top Cuban leaders to hold the title of revolutionary commander.

As a black man in racially diverse Cuba, Almeida was an important visual symbol of a break with the past, particularly in 1950s Cuba, when racism and discrimination were common. His close relationship with Castro for decades has been a sign of Afro-Cubans' access to power and influence in communist Cuba.

Just read a book which theorizes he was a mole for a coup to happen around November 30, 1963 that was aborted after November 22, 1963’s event.

“The rifle fire in Dallas that killed John F. Kennedy didn’t just start a frantic effort to find his assassins. JFK’s murder also launched a flurry of covert actions by officials like Robert F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, and Richard Helms to hide the fact that the United States was on the brink of invading Cuba as part of a JFK-authorized coup only ten days away.

The plan’s exposure could have cost the life of JFK’s coup leader, Cuban Army Commander Juan Almeida, and led to a nuclear confrontation with the Soviets, just a year after the Cuban Missile Crisis. But the cover-ups by these top officials also had the tragic effect of preventing a full investigation of JFK’s assassination, spawning a legacy of secrecy that would impact Presidents, Congress, and U.S. foreign policy for the next forty-five years.”

Presumably Joe Biden will be sent to the funeral, or perhaps Jimmy Carter since he knows Spanish.

In a nation that is overwhelmingly non-white, “vice -president” Juan Almeida (who was known more for his song writing than any political actiivty) was one of the only AfroCUbans in the high ranks of the Castro regime.

Castro was brought to pwer by a nouveau riche clique who resented the rise of a prosperous AfroCuban middle class in Cuba in the 1940s and 1950s. By the way, the “pro-American” adminstration that Castro overthrow was headed by an AfroCuban whose father fought in Cuba’s war of independence from Spain — (Castro’s father fought against Cuba in Spain’s military.
