Anti-Government Protests Draws Tens of Thousands to D.C.
The Washington Post ^ | 09-12-2009 | By Emma Brown, James Hohmann and Joel Achenbach

Tens of thousands of conservative protesters crowded outside the U.S. Capitol on Saturday, a massive demonstration aimed at stopping what organizers called the over-expansion of the federal government under the Obama administration.

"Hell hath no fury like a taxpayer ignored," declared Andrew Moylan, head of government affairs for the National Taxpayer Union, urging protesters to call their representatives. "You're being ignored today by the media and some politicians."

The crowd -- loud, rambunctious and sprawling -- gathered at the foot of the Capitol after a march along Pennsyvania Avenue from Freedom Plaza. Invocations of God and former President Reagan by an array of speakers drew loud cheers, echoing across the Mall. On a windy, overcast afternoon, hundreds of yellow "Don't Tread on Me" flags flapped in the breeze, mingled with U.S. and Texas state flags.

"We own the dome," the crowd chanted loudly, pointing at the Capitol.

About 30,000 people registered online for the march, according to one of the rally's sponsors, FreedomWorks, a Washington-based group headed by former House majority leader Dick Armey (R-Tex.). FreedomWorks and other sponsors, including Tea Party Patriots and ResistNet, comprise a loose coalition of conservative groups that helped organize several health-care and anti-tax rallies during the spring and summer.

The crowd surrounded the Capitol Reflecting Pool, spilling across Third Street and onto the Mall. The sound system was inadequate to the throng; speakers on stage, at the Capitol's West Front, were too distant to be intelligible to anyone near the edges of the rally.

"You will not spend the money of our children and our grandchildren to feed an overstuffed government," Rep. Tom Price (R-Ga.) said of the Obama administration, drawing loud cheers from the throng.

Tens of Thousands? More like hundreds of thousands...

The number they put in article was 30,000--those who registered on-line; of course there was no mention of the 2 million who actually marched....Leave it to WAPO to print a partial fact that is totally misleading!

I can’t remember ever seeing “tens of thousands of LIBERAL protesters...” ever being written anywhere. That’s really weird.

The Tea Party movement's core purpose and motivation is opposing Tyranny and (re)affirming Liberty!

How to distinguish Liberty from Tryanny:

  Liberty "Soft" Tyranny
1 Rights are inherent in, and unalienable from, individuals Rights are granted/rescinded by the majority through the government
2 Fundamental rights are life, liberty, and property (absence of coercion) Fundamental rights are food, housing, and healthcare (absence of necessity)
3 Property is owned by individuals who make decisions as to its use, improvement, and transfer Property is owned by 'the public' with government officials making decisions as to its use, improvement, and transfer
4 Government exists to protect the rights of individuals Government exists to plan and direct the resources of society
5 Government authority is decentralized in a federal system with limited and enumerated powers Government authority is centralized in a national system with broad and necessarily intrusive powers
6 Government action is prescribed by rules fixed and announced beforehand Government action is arbitrary and at the descretion of "czars" and planning boards
7 Economic activity is driven by a large number of small entities interacting according to simple rules Economic activity is driven by a small number of large entities operating within the constraints of complex regulations
8 Effective innovation results from contrarian thinking, individual initiative, and the voluntary exchange of property Efficient implementation of government planning requires conformity of opinion, collective action, and the coerced transfer of property
9 Standards of living for the many increase permanently as they utilize improved products and services conceived by the few Standards of living for the many increase temporarily as they utilize property redistributed from the few
10 Altruism is using one's own resources in concrete acts to help specific individuals Altruism is obligating the resources of others for broad-brush programs to help mankind in the abstract

Rights exists solely as a way to fairly decide whose will shall prevail in cases where two or more people disagree. They do not exist for the purpose of enslaving one person for the benefit of another (e.g., the "right" to free medical care.)

Liberty is the right to do whatever does not infringe the rights of others. Rights empower you to help yourself, free from interference by others.

Tyranny makes you a serf to be used by the elite to further their own power. Once upon a time, the nobility used religion to convince the serfs they had to serve the nobility. Modernly, the elite use good people's feelings of altruism to convince them to enslave both themselves and their neighbors. It's basically the same con game, just using a more sophisticated hook.

It took three mediocre WaPo reporters to write this. The WaPo doesn’t employ good writers anymore.

Up to two million people marched to the U.S. Capitol today, carrying signs with slogans such as “Obamacare makes me sick” as they protested the president’s health care plan and what they say is out-of-control spending.
The line of protesters spread across Pennsylvania Avenue for blocks, all the way to the capitol, according to the Washington Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency.

Times Online (UK) via Drudge stated there were almost two million (take it for what it's worth!)...One of the speakers said it had been estimated by midday at 1.5 million.
If it wasn't a million people it was DAMNED close! My brother and I were there and it was the most awesome thing I have ever seen in my entire life.
As we stood with others on the lawn of the Capitol,we were absolutely amazed-and so proud-to look back towards the Mall and see a veritable sea of faces, flags and signs.Absolutely a proud moment for us all.

Every day the SRM digs a deeper hole for itself. You can’t hide 1.5 million people. It only proves how worthless as a news source they are. By pass these traitors. That’s why I make it point to always take a camera to protests and post the pictures on the net. The sooner those lying dinosaurs wither away the better.

Headlines down play the number of people. Even Fox used Tens of thousands.

I have never seen that many people before. My guess is 1,500,000. Congress and the Senate better take note as the will be 2010 toast as the Tea party begins the revolution of 2010. Nancy and Harry take note!

The people will take back our country from the Socialist party you are forcing on America.

And that was only in Washington. For every person there and at every other rally, there were dozens that were not able to attend—like my family and my neighbor’s. The pols ignore at their political peril....
