There is particular concern over who will be responsible for policing the system. Government documents suggest new fathers will be allowed to sign themselves off for six months with no eligibility checks by the Government.

Ministers say the move will help smash Britain's 'macho' culture of men working through their children's early lives.

Yep, don't want to have any un-feminized men left over there.

I think soccer already “smashed” the macho culture in the UK. Only pansies left.

Sounds like employment must be seriously down in the UK. They are finding ways to rotate employees into temp positions for up to six months.

One of the biggest differences between America and Great Britain is the role of government. In many ways, Europe is still in a feudalistic mindset in which the lord of the manor is responsible for protecting the serfs, and the serfs provide the means for maintaining the lord. Brits believe that the government exists to take care of them. Whatever the problem may be, they look to the government to provide the solution.

The Founding Fathers of the United States wanted to be emancipated from the tyranny of the plantation or the fief. They believed in minimum government and maximum freedom. People were responsible for taking care of themselves, not the government. They were to find solutions to their own problems. When did the people of the United States start wanting to return to serfdom and the nanny state? We fought a war to gain our freedom from such enslavement, and do we now wish to return to the chains of tyranny?

and who exactly is going to pay for this?

The productive, overtaxed people of Great Britain.

So basically everyone should look for a single mum and ask to be her baby daddy or lesbian partner. Pay her a flat fee and then get half the year off work.

I hate to say this, but if my husband stayed home for 6 months after our babies, one of us would be dead right now!

Maybe this is an attempt at population control....one baby (and the husband home all day) and that would be the last child they’d ever have.

I wouldn’t worry overmuch about too much macho with the way UK has changed—they can’t even protect themselves in their own homes.<,p>vaudine

“Macho Culture”? Please. The Brits are closer to the French than anything “Macho” (Culturally that is).

What kind of job can you leave for 6 months or a year? Certainly not a job where individual input is important.

Yeah - One old guy still left working.

32 young guys out on (mandatory) leave, but with nothing being produced = no body buys the products.

Is that a steel mill or something?

Apparently it's a newsprint mill.

This is the page that I stole it from :-)
