If it’s such a meritocracy, then how did Corzine last so long?

GoldmanSachs unceremoniously dumped Corzine in the spring of 1999 after he, with the partners' VERY reluctant approval, effectively delayed the public offering of GS due to his insistence on GS' being one of the lead partners in the consortium that bailed out LTCM after their collapse in September 1998.

His tenure wasn't really all that long.

Exactly: he was good at what he did. Do you have any evidence to the contrary?
