Rep. Joe Wilson said Wednesday that former President Jimmy Carter's accusations of racism are a distraction from the issues.
At a town hall at his presidential center in Atlanta on Tuesday, Mr. Carter said Mr. Wilson's outburst during President Obama's speech last week was rooted in racism.
"I think it's based on racism," he said. "There is an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president."
The former president and Democratic members of Congress are playing politics, Mr. Wilson told The Washington Times' America's Morning News radio show. He was formally reprimanded by the House on Tuesday.
"That is such a distraction and a diversion from the issues that we should be discussing," he said. "I really want to take the advice of President Obama and that is that we should be discussing the issues and that is what I intend to do."
Mr. Wilson said he knew what he did was wrong -- interrupting Mr. Obama's speech with the outburst "You lie" in response to the president's assertion that a health reform bill would not include coverage for illegal immigrants.
He said he is not objecting to Mr. Obama the person, but the issues at stake in the health care reform debate.
Mr. Wilson immediately called the White House the evening of the speech to apologize.
"The apology was accepted and it was stated, 'Let's go on to a civil discussion of the issues of health care,' " he said.
In the last week, Mr. Wilson said, he has raised "significantly over $1 million" since he "became the number one target of Washington Democrats and Moveon.org."
He said he believed Democratic lawmakers used the incident to play politics.

They are losing big time on this issue and need distractions. The Clinton’s were white and it lost.
Carter == Senile
“I think it’s based on racism,” he said. “There is an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president.”
An African should not be president.
They obviously think that besides being racist, nazis and rednecks all of these ordinary folks who went to townhall meetings, tea parties and rallies across the country will have amnesia when election time rolls around. They will forget about all of the insults and just pull the lever for the Dems again. Good luck with that. I hope the Dems just keep pounding away until 2010.
You can already see Obama’s underlying theme that he hopes will convince Congress to pass his health care bill: These folks are just too stupid to know what’s good for them (a variation of his “clinging to guns and religion” lecture) so we need to pass this and get the country back on the right track. It will go on the right track all right, when these idiots get thrown out.
This has become a joke, therefore Wilson should just say that since he was sitting on Obama’s left side that he was addressing his white half.
In nearly sixty years of reporting, Robert Novak considered Jimmy Carter the most mendacious man he had ever met. And Novak met them all. Today, the only friend that Carter can call on, after decades of backbiting, is the Press. And they are still happy to go along with his blather.
I believe, once again, Jimmy Carter has created an astonishing stupid opinion to deny the reality before his nose. I spent my entire adult life cleaning up after this bozo and now we have a new one creating tomorrows sink holes. What is it with Dems; Kennedy/LBJ=Vietnam, Carter=Iran, Clinton=CRA, and now bammy=socialism supreme.
Carter = Anti-Semite
Historically, comments from from Former President Carter have always been classified as a "Distraction from reality". Even during his own presidency, his accusations of human rights violations around the World were constantly thrown to the press to distract them from his horrible job of handling international and economic issues. If he would just shut and let things go, he stands a very good chance of moving up to the 43rd best president ever. From what I know of Jimmy, he'll probably screw that up as well...
Mr. Carter...you have totally crossed the line. This is an outrageous statement and I demand you apologize to Mr. Wilson.
Mike
Is it just me, or do these folks live in total denial, i.e., they cannot accept the reality that American’s simply do not like their programs?
If I had Wilson’s pulpit right now I’d use it to deliver a short speech:
“Carter’s got a sick mind.” Period.
