Archbishop Gomez: Health Care MUST Include Illegal Immigrants
Lobbying Congress today on the issue
San Antonio Archbishop Jose Gomez says any health care reform plan has to include coverage for illegal immigrants, 1200 WOAI news reports.
"It must include immigrants, especially legal immigrants, but all immigrants," Gomez told 1200 WOAI news today from Washington DC, where he and other Catholic bishops are meeting with Hispanic members of Congress about health care and immigration reform.
"We are concerned about the immigrants," Gomez said. "The immigrants are human persons too, and one way or another, they are going to need health care. It think it is important to recognize that, and be open to them participating one way or another in the health care system in this country."
Health care or subsidies to purchase health care for illegals has become one of the hottest issues embroiling the health care debate.
It was President Obama's claim that illegals will not receive health care that prompted Rep. Joe Wilson (R-South Carolina) to yell his famous 'you lie!' to the President during a speech on health care to Congress.
Gomez and Bishop Jaime Soto of Sacramento said they met with Congress 'bringing the light of faith and the light of reason.'
"Any reasonable health care reform has to include the immigrant community, and has to provide, at a minimum, some sort of safety net for the undocumented," Soto said. "If we do not provide them access to quality health care, that will not only will affect their health care, but will also prejudice the health care of society in general. If this health care reform is not only to improve the health care of individuals but also improve the health care of society, it makes sense to include immigrants."
Gomez said he is also urging Congress to exclude coverage for abortion.
"This should be a universal plan, that everybody should be able to participate in the plan. That means also that we support a health care plan that includes the care of people from conception to natural death. I honor the statement of President Obama last week that federal funds are not going to be used for abortions, and also the protection of the conscience clause."
pissant, they still shouldn’t be getting tax dollars! And yes I lump them with ACORN because they’re undermining this country just like ACORN is. ALL this tax dollar subsidizing special interest groups has to stop! All of it.
Not a surprise. Its Catholic leaders in South America who are big pushers of socialism as “social justice”
I am sorry, but I agree that illegal immigrants SHOULD be included in this health care reform bill. It should read as follows: every time an illegal walks into a hospital or any other medical facility, he/she will be picked up, arrested, charge with: breaking and entering, trespassing and a number of other items (I can’t list them all) and then DEPORTED!
See, I agree with the Democrats, if we must have health care reform, it SHOULD include the illegal immigrants!!
There you go entering a logical argument into a discussion about the way Democrats want to run things! Silly person! /sarc
Maybe when they get their heads back on straight, I may go back to church...till then, NO WAY. Perhaps they should read the part of the good book that deals with rendering to Caesar those things that are his.
Any health plan must pay for full bus fare back to Mexico, and I'll even throw in a box lunch.
Screw him. Never heard of him.
Ping!
If you want on, or off this S. Texas/Mexico ping list, please FReepMail me.
Why doesn’t the archbishop direct his words to the Mexican Congress.?They are the ones who have failed to provide for the people despite the fact that Mexico is potentially a rich nation. Instead the wealth of the nation ends up in the hands of an oligarchy that doe snot invest in the country but in Swiss banks and elsewhere.
I don’t think citizenship is part of his job description, but if he’s illegal he should be deported.
They ALREADY get free healthcare, you idiot. That’s the F’in problem.
Let the Bishop pay for them, out of his own pocket.
They would barely have facilities to say mass in if it weren’t for white congregations. THey oughtta shut it.
Goals don't change because one wants to distance itself from the stench of the other.
PS: Answer to the 'all persons have health issues" claim is (1) one Aspirin, (2) one bus ticket, and (3) handcuffs. A family plan would be nice as well.
No problemo.
You should be going to mass for your OWN soul. It doesn’t go on their account when you don’t. Do what I do, refuse to fund them.
I'd also appreciate it if they could keep their nose out of American politics. We don't tell them how to run their religion, and couldn't care less how they think our government should be run. If our government has money to spend, spend it on building the fence to keep these invaders out. Otherwise, catch them and ship 'em home, sick or well.
Might want to spread this around for the hyper-sympathetic.

Well, Archbishop. Why don't you demonstrate that concern by opening hospitals in Mexico or otherwise working to alleviate the poverty of the nation where you were born so that they quit exporting people to the United States? Mexico is not a crowded country. Their population density is about the same as our state of Tennessee.
Neither is it a poor country. Mexico is rich in resources, cultivatable land and human capital. A relative handful of them control most of the nation's wealth.
Why is it so much easier to dump your problems on a neighbor rather than even try to fix them yourself?
Where will your people go if they succeed in turning America into a carbon copy of the sh*thole from whence they escaped?
Here is a statement on their homepage:
Health Care Statement
Catholic Charities USA states unequivocally that it does not support any plan to reform health care and/or any proposed legislative provision that allows or promotes the funding of abortions or that compels any health care provider or institution to provide such a service. In fact, Catholic Charities USA will continue to work with the Catholic Health Association and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to ensure that any health care reform legislation will not include such provisions. All media accounts or public comments that misrepresent this position are inaccurate.
I recall one sermon in Idaho where a visiting Hispanic priest essentially berated the congregation for not supporting more missions and for having too many luxuries. He kept asking ‘when?’ will there be equality for all.
