Unionized workers in the Chicago Sun-Times' newsroom have rejected demands for deep pay cuts and work-rule changes, putting at risk a planned sale of the financially struggling newspaper to an investment group.

...

Members of the Chicago Newspaper Guild were asked to lock in temporary 15% compensation cuts and agree to wiping out seniority rules and reducing severance guarantees. The union rejected those demands 83-22 Tuesday.

Sun-Times Media Chairman Jeremy Halbreich has told workers that a rejection will mean the end of the company.

In yesterday's news, the Chicago Newspaper Guild voted to put the Sun-Times out of business and eliminate their own jobs as well as the jobs of all employees of the Sun-Times. For unknown reasons, union membership has declined from a high of 36% of workers in the 1940's to a current low of 12%. More on this news later.

Wow. Their going to end up like the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. A few people writing for a website, probably not even as “good” (not as in content) as the PI either.

Bingo! Also, the union higher-ups will make out just fine.

Remember, unions are about power for the “leaders,” not serving their members. Same as with Congress and us...

It’s a perfect display of the ignorance of union members. One can only imagine how their lack of decision making skills affect their daily job.

Soon they will experience the consequences of their actions and realize how coddled they have been when they enter the school of hard knocks.

As a former forced member of the Amalgamated Meatcutters and Butcher Workmen of North America when I was a supermarket clerk back during my college days, I am laughing my azz off at the stupidity of unions. Rumor has it that when the paper shuts down, Obama is going to hire these union workers as his community enforcement goons in Chicago.

I, too, was a forced member of the useless union. zerO likes union mentality because they are puppets that need protecting - his favorite little pawns.
