John T. Elson, Editor Who Asked ‘Is God Dead?’ at Time, Dies at 78
NY Times ^ | 09/18/09 | WILLIAM GRIMES

Posted on 09/18/2009 2:25:16 PM PDT by Borges

All journalists want to write a story that makes a big splash. John T. Elson, the religion editor at Time magazine, was no exception. But in 1966 he got more than he bargained for.

For more than a year, Mr. Elson had labored over an article examining radical new approaches to thinking about God that were gaining currency in seminaries and universities and spilling over to the public at large.

When finally completed, it became the cover story for the issue of April 8, as Easter and Passover approached. The cover itself was eye-catching, the first one in Time’s 43-year history to appear without a photograph or an illustration. Giant blood-red letters against a black background spelled out the question “Is God Dead?”

The issue caused an uproar, equaled only by John Lennon’s offhand remark, published in a magazine for teenagers a few months later, that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus. The “Is God Dead?” issue gave Time its biggest newsstand sales in more than 20 years and elicited 3,500 letters to the editor, the most in its history to that point. It remains a signpost of the 1960s, testimony to the wrenching social changes transforming the United States.

This is old, but here goes:

“God is dead” - Nietzsche

“Nietzsche is dead” - God

“Well I’m not consigning someone to hell for writing an article.”

Did I? Consign him to hell, I mean? Do I have that power?

Wise woman. You should have listened to her.

This article gives this guy way more credit than he is due. I was taking one of the first of quite a few theology courses in college when this was current. It was a theory of a German theologian (whose name escapes me now), and I remember upon hearing it asking my prof if this was merely a philosophical exercise or did the guy really believe it. He said the guy did believe it. In any case, the trendy left wing authors that are mentioned in the article had nothing to to do with the movement except maybe to agree.

I pray he learned that God IS. He IS not dead, nor will He ever be.

Hell is not a destination to be chosen.

That is fair. But my opinion is only presumptuous so far as the implication that I really know someone’s eternal destiny. It is not presumptuous if the implication is that my opinion has any impact on someone’s eternal destiny. That is just crazy talk.

If there is a hell, there is a God who created it. He will not be asking my opinion about who goes there. Even if I am His best bud, he will not be asking me.

It does strike me somewhat ironic that often atheists or agnostics get the most nervous about speculation over whether a dead person is going to hell or not. Like any human’s opinion matters in the least. Do they think that just in case there is a hell, admittance will be based on popularity?

Not really picking on you. I could not tell from your posts where you were really coming from. So replying to you could be way off base. If so, I apologize.

You know the article in question is from 1966 right? And Allah is just the Arabic word for God.
