HANOVER, N.H. - In an annual rite, incoming Dartmouth College students dutifully lined up to shake the presidents hand, one of many perfunctory events that kick off each school year.
But this fall, the tradition was marked by an extra jolt of excitement: More than 1,000 freshmen clamored to meet Dartmouths newly appointed leader. The crowd wound around one end of the indoor track, out the door, and along the glass walls of the field house. Many waited longer than an hour.
At the head of the receiving line last week, Dr. Jim Yong Kim delighted the teenagers by greeting them not with a handshake, but with a fist bump. Some reached out for hugs as classmates snapped photos and sought autographs; other giddy students likened Kims appointment to the election of President Obama.
Thank you for coming to us, said one student, finding it hard to fathom why the Harvard Medical School professor would leave behind his groundbreaking humanitarian work in public health to lead the Ivy Leagues smallest school, tucked amid the hills of western New Hampshire.
A new college presidency is met by fanfare on every campus, but the change is particularly striking at Dartmouth. Faculty, students, and alumni have high hopes that Kim, who will be inaugurated as the colleges 17th president tomorrow, can usher in a new era for the 240-year-old university - an institution often viewed from the outside as a conservative bastion of white privilege dominated by raucous fraternities.

Ive never seen students so excited about a change in administrative office, said senior Jessica Guthrie, president of Dartmouths Afro-American Society. It was almost like sitting there on election night and seeing the moment of hope in the air and progress on the way.
Dartmouth alumni are not so enthusiastic. Since the palace coup that disenfranchised us, I refuse to contribute a nickel.
What’s so cool about him?
cause he’s not caucazoid?
he’s still a manpig ya know?
btw...I have felt that way since Trent Lott’s son threw Dixie and Colonel Reb under the bus at my alma mater
and my dad felt the same way after VMI let in cadets with boobs
Wow, now maybe some Asian students can get admitted. He’s broken another glass ceiling!
Yeah, I laughed at ‘cadets with boobs’ but it occured to me that some of those cadets probably had boobs that they shouldn’t have. How many times can I use boobs in this post. lol
True, Asian kids don’t get breaks in admissions. So my honorary Asian, college freshman, daughter tells me, any how. (You know, high GPA, piano or violin geek, Bible club)
Yeah, I know a couple honorary Asians, lol.
I read somewhere this weekend that Asian kids are docked over 100 SAT points for admission purposes.
Maybe because he likes living in a 99% white town (except for students) in a 98% white state, across the river from a 99% white state?
Or maybe it was just the money?
As Darthmouth graduate, I embrace this change.
What does 'diminished endowment' have to do with high tuition? There are always those who will pay full freight to send their darlings to their alma mater. There are always those who will borrow to the hilt to attend an ivy league school.
High tuition was here long before a market crash reduced ivy league school endowments.
What, exactly, is the change? What policies does the new president bring with him that you embrace? What policies of the past president did you not like?

So who’s smarter?
“You must hope for change, and change hope. Be the choice. Be the ball. You are the future communists of tomorrow! Pledge your life to overthrowing America! Remember, your Dartmouth diploma is a POS. Use it well!”
That would be, 'As 'a' Dartmouth graduate.................turn in your diploma you boob!
They woulda gone private but Bush I’s DOJ would had ROTC dropped.
