WASHINGTON (AFP) – Computer giant Dell announced on Monday it has acquired computer services firm Perot Systems, founded by Texas billionaire Ross Perot, for 3.9 billion dollars.

"Dell and Perot Systems have entered a definitive agreement for Dell to acquire Perot Systems in a transaction valued at approximately 3.9 billion dollars," Dell said in a statement.

Terms of the agreement were approved on Sunday by the boards of directors of both companies, it said.

Dell, which is seeking to buy all ordinary shares of Perot Systems at 30 dollars a share, hopes to complete the deal by the end of January.

Perot Systems then would become Dell's services division under Peter Altabef, the current Perot Systems chief executive officer.

Combine a company producing hardware as dirt cheap as possible with an expensive consulting and services firm. I expect that they will be split up within five years to the detriment of both. They're mixing oil and water.

They are following HP’s lead (HP acquiring EDS), and both are following IBM’s model. Succeeding will be another story...

But IBM dumped their (not quite so) cheap hardware line to focus on what they are good at. I’m not sure how HP/EDS will work out, but until the past few years HP was known for expensive but high quality products. Dell has always been primarily focused on low prices.

Does this mean that old Ross Perot is going to run for President in 2012?

This means that Perot knows when to sell before the shite hits the fan.

Exactly. If Perot Sys is forced to use in-house hardware from Dell then look for Perot Sys to lose customers and begin bleeding cash. On the other hand, as a direct competitor, it’s good to know others are going through merger hell too.

Your probably right. Perot is a pretty astute business man no doubt.
