Russia says Israel Not Planning Strike on Iran

President Dmitry Medvedev said Israel had given Russia assurances it plans no strike on Iran and reserved Moscow's right to sell Tehran arms, in an interview released by the Kremlin on Sunday.

Medvedev described an Israeli attack as "the worst thing that could be imagined" but said President Shimon Peres had ruled out such fears when the two leaders met in the Russian resort of Sochi in August.

"When Israeli President Peres was visiting me in Sochi recently, he said something very important for all of us: 'Israel does not plan any strikes on Iran, we are a peaceful country and we will not do this'," he said.

In the interview with CNN, Medvedev sidestepped questions on Russia's possible response in the case of Israeli air strikes although he hinted Moscow could take sides under such a scenario.

"What will happen after that? Humanitarian disaster, vast numbers of refugees, Iran's wish to take revenge not only on Israel but upon other countries as well," he said.

Though Russia has no alliances with Iran, "It does not mean that we would like to be or will be indifferent to such a development," Medvedev said.

"But my Israeli colleagues told me that they were not planning to act in this way," he reiterated.

Iran is due to hold talks with six world powers on October 1, the outcome of which could determine whether the United States and its allies impose more penalties on Tehran over suspicions it is working on an atomic bomb.

The United States is pressuring Russia to shift its current stance and back tougher sanctions, reportedly banking on its warming ties with Moscow since President Barack Obama shelved controversial missile shield plans in central Europe.

This is certainly confusing. Having Netanyahu recently return from his "secret" meeting with President Medvedev I don't think Medvedev would have made this statement without Israel's nod. Yet,if all the talk about Israel's imminent attack on Iranian nuclear facilities was only bluster, brinkmanship, why would Israel give the Mad Mullahs of Malevolence the sense of relief regarding any attack that might be imminent, especially if the perceived threat might wring concessions out of the Iranians? Time will certainly tell.

He also offered me 'first dibs' on a bridge over the East River.

Our troops would be at extreme risk in the Middle-East if we allowed Iran the bomb.

Unless Obama wants us to withdraw to our own borders, he better wake up. If he doesn’t then the rest of us should.

This should not continue to be unaddressed.

“The United States is pressuring Russia to shift its current stance and back tougher sanctions, reportedly banking on its warming ties with Moscow since President Barack Obama shelved controversial missile shield plans in central Europe.”

Russia is acting to further its own interest.

The liberals think everyone is a liberal, ready to self-sacrifice for the Common Good. Not Russia— they’ve been invaded too many times to even give an inch.

We should not include Russian support in our calculus against Iran. And we definitely shouldn’t be on the honor system in Eastern Europe.

For Russia, Iran is a customer.

Presently, jobs trump ruling the world. Iran provides jobs for Russian workers

While mutual economic development, business alliances, military cooperation certainly exist between the two, he must have meant there are no military alliances as mutual defense pact whereby Russia would react in case of attack on Iran.

Israel does not plan any strikes on Iran

It only means that either those plans have been made already, or that someone else (like the USA) did the planning :-)

Allow me to translate. The Iranian people who want freedom have just been sold own the river. This will be the fate of freedom loving Americans in the near future.

I hope and pray that Russia is wrong about an Israeli attack, and that Israel’s leaders feel as little fear (and respect) for obama as our enemies do.

After the post, I wondered just how good a Russian customer Iran is.

Per the CIA fact book
Netherlands 10.8%, Italy 8%, Germany 7.8%, Turkey 5.9%, Ukraine 5.4%, China 4.5%, Poland 4.4% (2008)

I couldn’t separate out oil and gas and that might move Iran up on the list

I don’t know if Medved is telling the truth on this. OTOH, Bibi is a schemer and he could have said one thing and then he would do another.

It’s the “Is”... is... scenario: that’s right — the Israelis aren’t PLANNING an attack on Iran. The planning has already been done.
