It’s another form of payment. You see this happening all the time with succesful TV programs and actors who can’t be paid much more than is in the budget for that slot.
Richard Dean Anderson made a fortune with SG-1 as an executive producer. So did Kelsey Grammer and Seinfeld and scores of other actors. Being an executive producer means one more check.
