DC Fire Department Did Not Estimate the Number of Participants in the September 12th March on DC
DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services ^ | September 21, 2009

Posted on 09/23/2009 8:54:47 PM PDT by JeepersFreepers

In reference to the September 12th Tea Party event held in Washington DC, quoting a “DC Fire Department Report”, regardless of what any media reported, the size of the crowd of those who attended this event were never estimated by DC Fire & EMS. Any reports contrary to this are false. The DC Fire & EMS Department does not estimate crowd sizes.

A Twitter posting estimating the crowd gathering at Lafayette Park only as “large, possibly as many as 60 thousand” stated that it was an early estimation of that specific area (Lafayette Park), not the number of participants in the event.

Bill O'Reilly and others in the media have been using the DC Fire Department Report as the official source for the number of participants in the March on DC on September 12th. Based on the official response from the DC Fire and Emergency Services, use of the Fire Department Report was erroneous and did not represent an estimate of the number of participants in the event.

Here is a copy of the email I sent to O’Reilly:
You have been quoting the DC Fire Department Report as the official number of those that attended the March on DC on September 12th.
Here is an official statement by the DC Fire Department in response: “In reference to the September 12th Tea Party event held in Washington DC, quoting a DC Fire Department Report”, regardless of what any media reported, the size of the crowd of those who attended this event were never estimated by DC Fire & EMS. Any reports contrary to this are false. The DC Fire & EMS Department does not estimate crowd sizes”. A Twitter posting estimating the crowd gathering at Lafayette Park only as “large, possibly as many as 60 thousand” stated that it was an early estimation of that specific area (Lafayette Park), not the number of participants in the event. (source: http://newsroom.dc.gov/show.aspx/agency/fems/section/2/release/18165)
You have minimized and denigrated this great and significant event by quoting an erroneous source with a number that is significantly lower than the actual number of participants. Will you publically correct this error and set the record straight?

I too was getting tired of him using such a low and obviously erroneous source to quote the size of the crowd. Maybe he would take the time to look at multiple reports and start doing a little ‘reporting’.

Well now since BOR claims he only cares about the facts, maybe he’ll now issue a correction to his reporting of it.

Keith Olberman cited these bogus “reports” as well.

I expect that out of him, and, sadly, I expect slop from BO as well.

They waited for it to be ‘old news’ before releasing the truth.

That way they can ‘tell the truth’ but nobody will care anymore.

There was one estimate by the police an hour before the actually start of 1.2 million!

Since the police don't give crowd estimates, either, you are simply replacing one bogus report with another.

Tea Party Protesters March on Washington

ABC News Was Misquoted on Crowd Size

Tea Party crowd-counting: An unfine art

"..Pete Piringer, a spokesman for the District of Columbia Fire Department, said he made an unofficial estimate of 60,000 to 70,000 at the beginning of the event..."

The above was what O'Reilly was using as a source. They may quibble that this was an UNOFFICIAL estimate, but apparently one was made.

It’s the National Park Service that does DC crowd estimates.

Conservative activists got in touch with the Fire Department directly and then had to wait for the response.

The fact the Left is still whining about this is proof enough it was a much larger crowd than they wanted it to be.
